I need to replace the nut on my Indonesia made Squire Strat. Does Squire, or a third party, make pre-cut nuts? If yes, does anyone know the part number, and/or a place I can get one?

Thanks,
-Adam

This is a job most guys take to a good tech. One advantage to having a blank nut is it can be cut for the gauge of strings you prefer. Even precut nuts need a little tweaking. I've seen some guys that really screwed up the binding on rosewood necks cutting the old nut out, not to mention cutting a little to deep or slipping with the chisel.
Unless your nut is truly "falling out" I'd at least consider having a Tech do it.
It might be money well spent

I just ordered the TUSQ nut that was recommended. I never really thought about how I'm gonna get the existing nut off.. it's securely in, there's just a chip by the high E slot. Is a chisel the standard tool to remove a nut? Also, what type of sanding/filing tool would you recommend when working on a nut (i.e. sanding down the height, enlarging the slots..)?

Thanks,
-Adam

Here's a link to a pdf from Stewart-Macdonald.com form graphtech. makes it look simple but many nuts are glued in and you end up using a fine tooth saw to cut the things out. I think you can find some help on-line do some searching Google, youtube, etc plus Stewmac might have some more info available. I get occasional e-mails with tips on repair or refinishing guitars. sign up for them.

Take your time!!! Good Luck
