Hello all,

I did a search for my problem, but could really find what address my issue, so here it is.

About a week after replacing my strings on my strat the 2nd string sounded dead; did not ring out kind of just thud, but only when played open. Hold the string down any where else on the fretboard and it sounds good.

This is what I Tried. I lowering the pickups; thinking they might be to close to the strings, but that made no difference. Additionally with the pickups still set low I replaced the "B" string thinking I might have a bad one, but it made no difference; still dead sounding. I am not sure where to go from here. Any help would be appreciated.

The only thing I see , it is the nut . This is the only part you "don't" use when you fret the string.
Can you see something diffent in THIS nut slot from other slot ?
Or you have an intonnation problem, saddle adjustment.

Is your guitar is old ? If it is a new guitar, go to see your dealer for warranty

Thanks for the tip. I think it maybe the nut after looking at it with a magnifying glass. I'll know more this weekend when I have time to work on it.

I had some time to look at my strat today and it looks like it was the nut. Again thanks for the tip. Now that I know what I'm looking at I'll see about changing it out for a bone nut.

Thanks again.

What did you see to be sure it is the nut ?

Yes, it could be the nut slot , but to be sure we talk about the same thing, why do you tell it is the nut ( slot )

If it is the case , almost all the time you could fix it to be sure problem solved ans after if you want you can replace the nut.

Send some photos of your nut and slot of your 2nd string

I couldn't take a picture of what was wrong, so I made a drawing of what was wrong. Basically the slot was not cut with the correct back angle. Instead of sloping toward the back where the tuners are; the slot had a slight hump in the middle. All I had to do was file a little bit of material away to correct the problem. Hope the drawing helps describe what was wrong and how I fixed it.

You are right , this slot look very bad. It might be your problem.

You can fix it with crazy glue and dust of the nut.

With sand paper or with a file , you remove small dust fom the top of the nut . With string remove, you put the dust in the slot , just enough dust ot little more to cover the wrong angle of the slot. You put a drop of crazy glue on the slot , over the dust.
After that you can use a needle file and file the right angle to the slot.

Put some paint tape on your guitare beacause the crazy glue....

After that if everythinfg soud fine, you can replace the nut ot keep your nut it is good for long time with this repair.
