I disagree with the first part of your statement but I totally agree with the second part.

Gibson builds a totally different guitar than Fender does. Also Gibson accoustics are about as good as it gets. If you are talking about high end accoustics that is. Like a Dove or a Songwriter or Hummingbird.

When it comes to mid range or lower priced guitars Fender has much better quality. A cheap $700.00 Les Paul sounds nothing like a $3,000.00 one. And no amount of tinkering will do any good. Also Gibson builds guitars now (As does Martin) that are made of what is known as HPL. High Pressure Laminate. In other words, FORMICA. They don't even have real wood on the fretboard.

I've got a 2003 Gibson Les Paul Studio, and an Epi Les Paul Goldtop VOS and the Epi is just as good as the "real Gibson" Of course this was when Epi made guitars in Korea.

Fender is a much better choice when it comes to quality and value over Gibson, unless you can plunk down $3,500 on a Custom LP or ES 335 or 333.

There is however no guitar that sounds like a Strat or Tele.

There's no competition. Both are very different guitars. I own both Gibson & Fender and neither do what the other does.

gibson=too heavy (lp) and balances wrong when seated or neck heavy (sg), binding that cuts into my wrist (lp), too expensive. flat radius.

fender= good weight but not too much. hangs in the right place. (strat) great on the knee. contour comforted. a more suitable radius for me.

my other favs for a strat=unique inbetween tones+noise cancelling. changable neck for wood or radius experiments. chimey tone on the neck that i love. i think i may prefer a humbucker on the bridge... maybe i'll try a lace red!

A real comparison is difficult to make, because Gibson builds so many more types of guitars but the statement that each does what the other cannot do is right on. Yeah, a LP is heavy, because it is a 2 piece solid mohageny body with an archtop design that raises the pickups to the strings, that is what gives it that sustain. I love both of my Les Paul's. And they sound really really good clean with some delay and compression.

But overall I think that Fender gives far better value. I've seen some $1,000+ Gibson's that were real dogs. Sharp frets, glue marks, totally unacceptable for the money that they are charging. But some people "Gotta have a Gibson" I was in a music store, and they are a Gibson dealer, and they had some Gibson accoustics on the wall. These were made in Boseman MT. (They had a string lock so you could not play them) but the guitar was HPL on the sides and the fretboard. And they were charging $800.00 for it! I was looking at a guitar and a girl came in with her dad and he said "Wow, $800.00" I
said, "Yeah, it's a crime to charge that much for plastic and sawdust." The girl said "What do you think of Seagulls?" I said that in my opinion they were far superior to these and that the cedar ages well and gives a smooth sound. Then the manager asked me if I could please leave! So I said, "Don't worry about what your friends think, anyone who knows about guitars will know you were too smart to buy a guitar made of formica."

Then he really got pissed.
