Hi,

My parents bought me, as my very first electric guitar, a Squier Stratocaster. But I don't know what's the exact model and it's been bugging me lately ;) Is it Affinity? Classic Vibe?

It was bought in December 1996. Not sure what's the color name but it looks burgundy/claret as show on the pictures:

I also would like ot know how to clean this guitar. I guess the fretboard is maple, so can I use zippo fuel to clean it? What about using steel wool? lemon oil? Can I use whatever kind of polish on the guitar body, like Dunlop Polish?

Thanks!

DO NOT get Zippo fuel (naptha) anywhere near that guitar! Far too strong a solvent that will eat the finish! A soft cloth and Pledge or another similar light wax wood care product is all you need. Steel wool will also scratch the bejeezus out of it. A very light carnuba car or guitar wax should be fine on the paint. Your best bet for keeping it cleen is to wipe it down with a soft cloth after playing/handling, body, neck and strings.

From a Wiki article I found:
Korean Squiers

CN/VN: C = Cor-Tek (Cort), V = Saehan(Sunghan), S was already taken by Samick so Saehan(Sunghan) used V instead (Saehan(Sunghan) made the Vester guitars), N = Nineties (1990s), the first number following the serial number prefix is the year.

Congrats on your new guitar!

I clean all of my guitars with naptha and never had any problems. All Squiers have a poly finish and even the most aggressive paint removal chemicals have a hard time eating through the finish. I just put a little on a soft cloth and wipe down the guitar. Works great to remove dirt.

If you want to remove scratches, I found that this system works great. It's not recommend for vintage finishes, but would work great on a poly finish.

I use Dunlop 65 to polish with.

Everyone will have different answers on polishing, so try some different approaches and see which works best for you.

Looks to be made in 99 as previously stated. This was before all of the different series were introduced, so it would just be considered a "Squier Stratocaster".

Looks like a Squier Standard. I use GHS guitar gloss on new guitars, applied with a cleaning cloth.
