I have been modding guitars for a few years now and have grown to love the "cheap" fender. I think they get the bad name because of the electronics. The guitars themselves play pretty good but the pickups leave you wanting more especially if you are used to nice guitars. Replace the electronics and the guitar will stand up against almost any guitar IMO.

A friend of mine bought a pretty pricey american Fender. I redid the electronics (pickups, pots, switches, sheilding) in a Costco Fender starcaster that I got for $50 off ebay. A few hardware adjustments to make it stand out a bit and the entire project cost me $250. The guy with the expensive guitar loves mine and so do I.

Great project guitars.

[quote="Stigall"]
I think one starts to see that every guitar has it's own 'personality,' if you will, and is as different from the next as each player is. "

Stigall hit it bang on. I don't think I've yet played two identical model guitars that played identically. What it comes down to is personal preference mixed with a certain something some guitars have & others don't, irrespective of the label. I've played several Highway 1 Strats & Teles that had nicer voices than Deluxes, but I've also tried some deluxes that were stunning.

I played my way through 9 les Pauls in 5 different shops one day, and the one that I would have chosen (still can't believe it) was a red, beat-upon '80 Deluxe, because it had a soul the others lacked (including a new Custom).

If it's the right guitar for you, then it's right. Ignore the label, play the sucker and enjoy it.

My Squier Strat is about equal to a MIM Standard Strat.

It doesn't come close to my MIM Deluxe Players Strat, but there's also a $500 price difference.

The old Squier Pro Tone Strat HSS with locking tremolo I have put a few Fender's in their place. Another example of a somewhat inexpensive guitar, that when you find a good one, it can be *really* good.

As the owner of both (MIM/Squier), lots of great info here. Some simply look at the Headstock and judge from there. I have an 00'/01' Standard Squier that I would not trade for the world. Both are complete guitars, and as many have stated, the necks on both of these instruments are incredible. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the Standard Squier Sunburst bodies made out of Alder? I'm sure every other color is either Agathis or Red Cedar. I've heard the complaints about the Indonesian Squiers being crap. I'm not sure of the "craptivity" but I must have been lucky to get the ones I have.

Tboz275 - couldn't agree more on those Ibanez's. I have an old 83' AR30, never was sure if those Super 70's pups were worth having your spine re-aligned.....but God they sounded great!

FletcherV - Great point. The 00' Standard I copped had loose tuners, and a loose jack plate (which are common in the IC strats....so I hear). The guy was saying it was a piece of junk (Shoreline Gold/ Tinted Maple Neck..etc). The moment I pick this thing up, not sure if it was mojo or not, but I knew faults and all, she was a keeper. Tightened the tuners and secured the JP with the appropriate glue.........that was 8 years ago. She's still rockin' and as beautiful as ever.

OT: I don't see many 3TSB Squiers out there........do they still exist?

If the Les Paul that folowed you has the P.A.F. style '57 humbuckers, I have no doubt that your Squier sounded better.
I've had a '58 Re-issue with '57 'buckers for about 20 yrs now, and they are without a doubt the weakest, most anemic p/up's ever made.
Of my 5 electrics, my high dollar Les Paul, has the least output.

Went to Guitar Center the other day. I own an affinity tele. Thought I'd play with the MIM Telecasters. Picked up a black one... every fret stuck off the neck on both sides and sharp! The neck Pick Up was way off the strings. Picked up a white MIM Telecaster... smooth frets, sounded good (but was playing through a really nice Marshall amp). My Squier Affinity Tele has a glass smooth fret work on the neck and sounds equal to the MIM 'casters. My Chinese Squier far surpased the black MIM 'caster in workmanship. The differences between the two MIM 'casters makes one wonder about the quality control. Why pay $399 when you can pay $169? Thinking about replacing with Seymour Duncan pickups... maybe.

Most people who say bad things about Squiers either

A. have never played one
B. say they sound like crap

My Affinity tele plays like a dream.
Pickups are not the best, but I payed $100.00, what do you expect?
Put some pickuos in these things and they will keep up with any MIM or equal guitar. I will not say they equal MIA, but for 900 more, I don't think the comparison is even justified.

People who put down these guitars are comparing them to guitars that cost 300 to 1000 more. For the price, these are great guitars. I don't think people realize that these are excellent guitars for 1/4 to 1/10 the price!!!! Really think about it. Great guitars for 100 to 300? And people still say things like

pickups suck
fret buzz
knob fell off
loose jack

Give me a break. I have seen Gibsons with similar problems. Hell I once sent back a MIA Strat. Pretty guitar, nice case, the third pickup didn't work. Yes over 1000.00 and the pickup did not work. That is when I said to myself, is the price difference justified? HELL NO!!!

Beginners only? Please.

yep, i agree with redbird.

i own an affinity strat, and recently my friend got me a Fernandes (forgot which model) neck pickup and hell, it sounds amazing!

the real thing about playing guitar is to enjoy playing regardless the brand. take good care of the guitar, play it regularly, change the electronics (if you're still not satisfied with it) and just enjoy.

i know a guy who brags a lot about his fender but i kinda shut his mouth when we plugged our guitars. why spend more when one of the best is in reach?

Yes Squire guitars can sound better than more expensive guitars. I have owned 2 Squires over the years. I currently own a CV 60 now. My first one was a Korean made HM III with the funky headstock. I had 2 people want to trade me guitars after a gig session at a friends house. One guy had a Hammer (unsure model. but strat-like body) and the other had a Fender American Standard. I figured that if these people, who played better than me at the time and had nicer guitars, wanted my guitar I must have a winner. BTW I had not modified that HM III at that point, that came much later in it's life.

Squire has always had a bad rap, but people always do a double take when I pull one out and make it sing.

i recently bought a used bullet strat (crafted in china, oh yeah) (as a project/learning guitar cos i didnt want to mess with my MIM strat until i'd learned a few things about how they work. anyway, apart from the tuners the bullet is a real surprise, i'm enjoying it bigtime. great neck, really good. not sure about the pickups yet but for the money, i'm happy.

I won a Squire Bullet from a radio show last month along with a camera, Rock Band and 5 tickets to see REO Speedwagon, Styx and 38 Special and the bands signed it. we had great seats! And we got to on stage with the bands for the final song. And seats were great!

My Squier has Texas Specials, and the neck and everything just feels right. It's my main axe right now. Trouble is it keeps having all sorts of issues. The frets, the tremolo, the input jack, all pale in comparison to my MIM Fender. Quality replacement parts are very hard to come by for Affinity Squiers. So even though it sounds great, and it feels great, I'm still looking for a Fender that sounds great, feels great, and doesn't have to constantly get repaired.

Excellent post. The squires give you a lot of bang for the buck.

I would go on to say that in a blind test it would be hard to differentiate between a properly setup Squire and a reasonably priced Fender.

The salesman that sold me mine told me that a mid level Squire is on a par with any lower level Fender.
