Took the plunge and bought a Squire Start to learn on. Always been a fan of the guitar.
Clapton, Hendrix, Moore to name but three are my favourites.

Any advice on the best way to learn, i have some lessons booked.

I was thinking about ways to improve my playing at home. I gave up work so have a lot of time on my hands.
Many thanks all. :D

Welcome and congrats!

The best way is by what you've already done - booking lessons. At home, the best advice I can give you is to take it slow and diligently, don't be your own worst critic and certainly, don't try to compete with yourself; keep a positive attitude and ask lots of questions.

Welcome aboard! Lessons are good.

There are also a lot of websites that do a great job of teaching guitarists of all levels. This Fender site has some video instructions. Check the "Community" drop down menu above for a link to Online Guitar Lessons.

I have a subscription to http://www.guitartricks.com . I've found it really handy to pick up tips. There's also a complete video course for beginners, intermediate and advanced guitarists. You get 20 free lessons and then you can buy a year of unlimited use for under $15 a month. MUCH less than one in-person guitar lesson. And, you don't have to start with "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" LOL.

All the best.

Doc

Thanks for the replies guys.
I have looked in on the Fender guitar lessons. In fact i have been practising this morning. Empty house you see, wife out at work.

I also got a DVD from Fender when i purchased the instument.
Again i have trawled the internet for hints and tips. I've found some great sites, EG the one you mentioned Doc. LoL and some not so good places.

First off i learned the scales, then how to replace a string, being a bit over keen with tuning, LoL.

Can anyone suggest a good site that can give me hints on the usage of the amp, all the dials and setting have me flummoxed

Thanks again guys.

I did get the Squier Standard. The one i would liked to have had was way over my price mark. LoL.

With Christmas looming, my wife just might spend a few pounds on me.LOL :D

I have trawled thru you tube.
What is the best way to keep the body clean. The finger marks are a not very nice to look at. I've just used a soft micro fibre cloth to clean it :?:

Welcome! A Squier Standard is a great guitar.

A micro fiber cloth works great for wiping down your guitar. I use Dunlop 65 polish & cleaner on the body occasionally as well. If you have a rosewood fretboard, you can use lemon oil on it once or twice a year.

Yes welcome aboard, and good luck with the playing.

You have some work ahead of you in order to become competent, but that effort will be rewarded like you wouldn't believe.

As well as lessons, practise is the key! And regular practise at that. Just 30 mins every day is so much better than 3.5 hours once a week.

Good luck to you

Welcome to the wonderful and sometime frustrating world of guitar playing!

Looks like you're headed in the right direction with lessons.

Here's a good site for all levels of playing.

Welcome! (I'm pretty new too)

Booking lessons was the first step, and the smartest one! Teaching yourself works for some people, and for others it doesn't. You'll find out what's your style of learning. For material, I would take a look on ultimate-guitar.com, they have some vids and thousands upon thousands of tabs (They also have a decent forum too..., not as good as fenders imho) Good luck (and good guitar choice)!

Learning to tune well should be the first thing that every guitarist learns lol.

What kind of amp do you have? (for settings and such...)

Tuesday. some blues notes, i enjoyed every minute of both lessons.

Got the bug now, i want a Fender Stratocaster after playing ( trying to ) it at the lessons.
