If you're standing with the darn thing hanging off your shoulder for 3-4 hours a night, it can get to you. That's why I like wide straps. They help a bit.

Part of my physical rehab is playing a guitar! It's something I've done as a hobby since I was a young child! So, whilst I'm healing from injuries (I'm in good shape otherwise), and to keep my sanity, I continue playing the guitar.

I can't wait till I find the perfect Fender for me. I thoroughly enjoy the Fender experience -- the good, the bad, and the al!

FYI, the Hwy 1 blew my mind. It had incredible tone and feel and was a breeze to tune with the locking tuners and Callaham installed, a long painful experience without the mods. But, the mods tipped the balance of the scale weight wise for my back. And, I didn't want to turn it into Swiss cheese and risk disappointment and lose money on the investment. So, I sold it and the new owner is verrrry happy. A great experience!

The CV 50 is light enough to fiddle with, but will require substantial work to satisfy my needs -- the Hwy 1 spoiled me rotten!

Squier vs Fender?

Well it depends on what you want, what you can afford and comparing the Fender & the Squier.

I'm looking at getting a fretless bass and have tried out the Vintage Modified fretless J Bass and the MIM fretless J Bass.

The MIA ones are too expensive for me as this would be something to play for fun.

I like the Squier better--I love the pickups in it and that the fingerboard won't get chewed up by roundwounds.

I haven't bought one yet--but that might be my next gear purchase after a few non gear things get taken care of.

Okidoki. Having perused a couple of the post since I posted yesterday...

Point 1. If you buy guitars over the internet, you deserve everything you get.
Get off your $@! and go and TRY one out in the shop. If it's too heavy for you, put it back and try another. I don't care what your circumstances are - I'm officially blind (less than 10% vision), so don't start bleating about disabilities - buying a guitar is like buying clothing - you can't guess about whether the size is right and then blame the store because you didn't try it on.
Take some responsibility.

Point 2. Used/secondhand instruments do not reflect the build quality of the manufacturer. Some have been improved, some have been butchered.

Point 3. When you buy a guitar online, it is shipped from a warehouse, unopened since the box was sealed at the manufacturer, so it doesn't get a setup or the attention that a guitar bought in store will. Also, there's no 'haggle room' online.
Example - I bought a Squier Jazzmaster for jollies just before Christmas. Store price - £334.
Q1 - "These are £255 on your website, yes?" Sales kid "We'll do it for that price."
Q2 - "Does it come with a gigbad?" SK - "It will." SK produces a Fender gigbag from the storeroom.
Q3 - "I hear these work best on 11s or heavier. What gauge are on it?" SK. "I believe they're 9s."
"Okay, I'll take it."
In total there was about 20 minutes of related chat, reminiscing about the old days etc.
As he's filling out the invoice he asked if there was anything else. I asked for a set of 11s for it, as it happens they were doing 'my brand' in that gauge on a two for one deal AND he didn't bill me for the strings, either.
So, by taking the bus trip into town, instead of doing it online, I 'saved' £50 on the whole deal, as well as getting the guitar for about £80 less than the store price, the sales kid got his commission and I got to have a natter with a few people along the way. I didn't have to wait a day or two for a guitar that may have the odd battle scar in transit, IT didn't sit overnight in a freezing warehouse and the trussrod already had tension on it - which is rarely the case with online purchases.
It's a ~£300 guitar, not a Custom Shop reissue, so I don't expect it to feel or sound as good as one. It's a great guitar FOR THE MONEY.
You get what you pay for. A £100 guitar is not as good as a £1000 guitar - never has been, never will be, butthe gulf is not as big as it used to be.

Like my Dad and Grandad used to say, "kids today don't know they're born". They were absolutely right. A budget instrument when I was a kid in the 80s wasn't as good as they are now. The ones in the 50s and 60s...???... and you'd have paid the equivalent of £2500 for one back then, as well.

I agree. I shopped the internet verrrry carefully and I just got a brand spanking new 2012 Gibson SG Standard w/ factory case for $799.00 shipped to my door that is *the* best guitar I've ever played. The first two that were shipped to me, two SG Special Worns, had factory issues but were cheerfully exchanged!

The purchase I made online before that, a Hwy 1 strat, the first one wasn't right, again, cheerfully exchanged. The second one that arrived was incredible!

Everybody deserves a good guitar and I got one.

And, I can't tell you how many times I hear that somebody went into many stores, played a bunch of guitars, found one they thought was it and then ended up unhappy with it.

It's a crap-shoot all the way around unless you're an experienced player and get lucky or go custom shop or master build, even then...I've heard many stories about dissatisfaction on the back-end.

Ironically, the guitar I sold and missed the most is a red Silvertone with a nail for a bridge that was gifted to me at a recording studio during my first real recording session! Laughingly, they said: "Play this one, you'll like it. Somebody left it here and they don't want to come back and get it." When I sold it, I wasn't playing it much because I had a blonde SG 61 reissue w/ 3 pickups, a Hagstrom hollow-body, and a homemade solidbody guitar, was name brand stupid, needed cash to pay the rent, got the most amount of money with the least amount of loss for the Silvertone, gone. That guitar was magical! But, the SG I got now...no comparison, all the magic but the SG, a full-blown musical instrument!

And, you can surf on over to Sweetwater and see exactly what you get down to every detail, including the weight and a good setup!

So, buying online is an excellent way to go if you know how to do it and get it from a reputable seller like American Musical and Sweetwater to name a couple! I got the SG from American Musical, sight un-seen!

If you aren't sure I would advise not to buy on the internet. Go to the shop where you can feel how heavy the guitar is, how it plays, how it feels in your hands.

If you like the one on the shelf ask for one fresh from the box, same make and models can feel very different, if it feels different ask them to do a setup then try again.

Any guitar can come from the factory defective regardless of quality or value yes even American made fenders and Gibson's thats life. Buying from the shop you get the problems solved before you get it through your front door.

I always buy gear in person--I have to try it out--maybe I'm picky--but it means I'm seldom disappointed.
