Hey all,

I just acquired a 1989 USA Squier Strat. When I got it it had a USA made 87 Fender strat bridge in it, but the previous owner had drove the 6 screws that hold down the bridge in sideways to compensate for the difference in the screw spacing between what the original bridge had, and the fender bridge.
I had a GFS 'import' spec bridge that is supposed to fit all squiers and mexican made fender strats, but upon installing it I found: 1) the trem claw is not wide enough where the two screw holes on it line up with the holes in the cavity. 2) although the screw spacing on the bridge seemed to line up, the screws seemed too long, and the tremolo block is pushed up against the body on one side, making it impossible to use the tremolo.
So, my question is does anyone know what kinds of bridges were used in the USA made squiers, and where I could find one? If not, any suggestions other than carving out some of the wood on the inside of the tremolo cavity where the block is scraping?

Thanks

I'm asuming you got a two screw trem otherwise that is what you need.

Check out StewMac. They have some trems that have only one claw screw opening and the rest of the surface is flat so the second screw can be anywhere. Another option would be to refill the holes with good quality wood plugs (with the same grain, don't use a rod) and redrilling.

You have your job cut out for you but the rewards are going to be well worth it. A two screw trem is worlds apart when it comes to dive bombing. I would go for a Floyd Rose and cut a cavity. But that's just my opinion. Stick to your plan and go for it!

Hey thanks so much for the reply;
Thing is I really don't want to drill any holes into it as at the moment I'm not sure if I'm going to sell it or keep it (all depends on another guitar I'm working on at the moment). I put a MIM Fender bridge into it and the screw holes line up fine, the trem block sits in the cavity nicely,but the high e string doesn't line quite like it should with the poles on the pickups. Not that bg of a deal as it still plays okay, but it's just got me puzzled as to what kind of bridge they used on these USA Squiers.
