I put a three position switch in today and was sad to find a plywood body. Inexpensive is one thing but cheap sucks.

It's not plywood. Those are routing marks. They use very powerful routers that make rough cuts on the wood. There is no need to finish the pickup cavity but I'm sure on the more expensive models they do before adding shielding paint.

Most guitars are made out of some kind of hardwood that is not that expensive. There are very few plywood guitars in this country.

Dude it's plywood. Real guitars don't have voids in the wood, I'm sure if I sanded it I would find more filler than is in my car. :(

Sorry to hear that but you can always use the hardware on a better slab of wood. Try Guitar Fetish. They have some nice ash bodies pretty cheap. You should be able to use your same neck. Just do some research on guitar assembly and if you need help let me know here or by PM. (Just follow the links.)

Technically it's not plywood, but laminated wood. Some older squiers that were made in Korea use it. Also the Bullet model use to be made of laminated wood. I'm sure there are some others that did as well. There is alot of debate around the tonal qualities of limated wood. Some can tell a difference, some can't.

I fall into the camp that the wood doesn't make as much difference to the sound as the pups and amp. I have a SG clone made of elm that sounds as good as any of my other guitars!

It just boils down to personal preference. If you like it keep it, you can grab a new body. Also look at GC used site you can get a used Squier as cheap as $50 and they will ship.

Gernade, Look on the positive side. You have a "semi-hollow" body Strat, Sell it on ebay as one of a kind. Make a small fortune and get a really nice Strat.

Seriously: Look at those GFS bodies. They claim to be machined for Fender import parts. I may get one just cuz they're cheaper than I can strip and refinish a body for.
