No problem I assure you. How Gibson allows this guitar to be sold as a Les Paul just amazes me. No wonder they are on the verge of being broke again.

To make a point, the LP 100 has a bolt on neck where the other Epi Les Pauls all have set necks. The LP 100 has a maple top while the others have mahogany, and the LP 100 is not just a LP without the binding and such.

If you doubt, go compare 2 of them side by side. Pick them each up and you will feel a difference in the weight of each, and compare the thickness of the bodies.

Yep, the 100 is a pretty nasty guitar. The LP Standard is a big leap up from those.

looking at the styles you want to play as others have already said i would go for a strat my first ever guitar was an affinity strat, but do look at other makes of guitar, yamaha do a good entry level guitar in the pacifica range and they are strat shaped.

look around and ask questions, a good guitar shop will be happy to advise and let you look at all the guitars within your budget, and always ask if you can get a deal if you buy a full package i.e. amp, strap, leads, spare strings, picks. yes you can get all this in a starter pack but the amps arent always brilliant.

maybe up your budget a bit and go for a higher spec guitar and amp. i have a classic vibe 50's strat and a vox pathfinder 15r amp and they set me in at £300 total, the guitar i purchased 2nd hand for 200 theres no reason you cant find this deal elsewhere in the world shop around a bit but always at least hold the guitars so you know how they feel some are more comfortable to hold that others, and maybe ask the salesman to play them for you so you know the difference in sounds they make.

have a budget and stick to it dont go mad there is no reason you cant walk away with a damn good beginner setup with a 400 budget, and be cheeky and ask if they can give the guitar a proper setup for you

Don't be afraid of the used section either, a lot of players will trade in their guitars when they move up to something better. I've seen plenty of Standard Series Strats and Teles going for $99.00-$125.00. That's cheaper than a new Affinity series is. This is a good time to look, because a lot of people that got X-Mas money will be using that and their old guitar to trade up. This is a good time of year to look, as well as March is. That's when people begin to realize that playing a real guitar is a lot harder than playing Rock Band. Or they realize how much work you need to put into learning.
