Hi, I'm a beginner n I'm about to buy my first electric guitar and I can't make up my mind whether to buy a fender squier affinity strat or an epi LP-100. My first choice was the strat but recently i saw a les paul n it looked pretty good.....now i can't decide. I want to play stuff like what clapton plays, blues n pink floyd. Which guitar would suit those styles better?[ if i manage to be able to play it that is  ]
Any advice would be appreciated.....

the strat would suit the clapton and floyd better, depends what type of blues you play, if you into the more bb king sound then the epi will be nice otherwise a good quality humbucker in the strat will sound the part as well... personally id go for the strat as its easily modified

The strat would suit the styles you listed better, but you should go to the shop and play a bunch of guitars in your price range to see which one feels best. After you have made your choice, have it set up by a guitar tech. This will make the instrument play better and stay more in tune.

This is one of those questions that you should really just trust yourself. You'll know when you run across that guitar you like and want to buy it. Try everything within your price range. You might find even another Brand of guitar that just feels good and sounds good to you. I wouldn't limit my choices to just 2. I think even Ibanez Gio makes good stuff. Mine has a great neck on it, and feels nice.

Well at $200-$230 one could get a Classic Vibe Squier used and those would be better than a Standard new to be honest.

I'd stay away from the Les Paul 100. It is not a Les Paul in any sense of the word. Not a 2 piece mohagany body, not an arch top for example. Basically it is a Les Paul Special 2 with a pick guard added and pick up rings. If money is an object than consider going used. I have a friend who just bought her son a Squier Standard Strat in Cherry Sunburst for $99.00 at Guitar Center, with a gig bag. I bought a black and chrome Tele for $79.00. The resale value for Squiers is not that high. An affinity that sells for $160.00 new is going to be worth about $65.00 when you go to sell it so that the dealer can make some money off it selling it at 100. At GC they sell used for about half of what new costs, and you get half of that as cash, maybe more on trade for a new guitar, but not that much.

Seeing as Gilmour and EC both play strats, that should be a hint.

I just bought my first electric guitar, a few months ago, and went through that very same question you are asking and I can tell you from my experiances that what everyone has said here has merit. Don't limit yourself to 1 or 2 guitars... once you've fixed your budget try EVERYTHING in that price range. The one that sounds and feels the best to you is The One... for now. You'll be looking for the next One later.

After test-driving Epiphone LP Special II, Peavey SC-2 and a Squier Standard Fat Strat (Black and Chrome) I ended up with the Squier. The HSS pup config gave it way more versatility, tone-wise, that the other guitars didn't and as a new player I want that kind of flexibilty to explore.

*You didn't mention anything about an amp in your posting... same principle applies.

Brunonew:

To me the most important things when choosing a guitar are (1) How does it feel in your hands and (2) how does it sound with your amplifier.

I have both a Stratocaster and a Les Paul and I like them both for different reasons. The Stratocaster feels better in my hands and is simple more fun to play. My hands move around much easier than with the Les Paul. The Les Paul, for me sounds so much better when I play. It simply blows the Stratocaster out of the water tonally. The Chunky neck is not as easy to navigate as the Stratocaster though. So as you can see there are tradeoffs.

Both of the points listed above are subjective. They might by the same for you and then again they might not. Take your time and try both guitars out. If you are a complete beginner, don't worry if you don't know how to play yet. Simply learn how to finger a chord or two like E major and C major. See how they feel when you hold them for 10 or 15 second while slowly strumming each chord. Play the first 4 frets of each string while changing fingers (1st fret 1st finger, then second fret second finger, etc). How does that feel. It is vitally important that you feel somewhat comfortable with the guitar right from the beginning.

Additionally, don't feel that you have to choose a strat or an LP. Look at some of the other brands in your price range. I have an old Dean EVO guitar that was super cheap but is extremely comfortable for me to play. You never know what you are going to like until you try it!

A final important decision will be your amp. A good amp can make a mediocre guitar sound better. You don't have to spend an arm and a leg to get a good sounding beginner amplifier. Two that stand out to me are the Fender Mustang I and the Fender G-dec 3. Either one would make a nice practice amp for a beginner. Sure, we all want tube amps BUT a good solid state practice amp will be perfect in the beginning.

Good luck in your hunt!

BrunoNew,

I received the Affinity telecaster as a gift for Christmas. I absolutely love this guitar. I know that it is the entry level line but it plays nice, the neck is quick and it was set up rather nice right out of the box.

I have a Dean, LTD, Jackson as well and I think the Squier is going to be the most used on in the collection.

It has to feel like it belongs to you.

No matter which guitar you buy, it needs to be played for you to learn.

Honestly I would save a little longer to get a Deluxe, VM or CV. They are a good jump up from the lower end Squier guitars.

To correct another post, the LP100 does have a curved top. It basically is a Standard LP w/o the body binding. It, along with a flat body Special ll are good guitars that I strongly recommend over an Affinity, mainly because of better sound and wider string spacing. Affinity is a guitar for smaller hands that most adults don't have.

To make a point, the LP 100 has a bolt on neck where the other Epi Les Pauls all have set necks. The LP 100 has a maple top while the others have mahogany, and the LP 100 is not just a LP without the binding and such.

If you doubt, go compare 2 of them side by side. Pick them each up and you will feel a difference in the weight of each, and compare the thickness of the bodies.
