After a week and fiddling with everything I can think of I just can't get the Vintage Modified Tele Custom II to stay in tune. And it comes out of tune QUICKLY. I believe the main problem is the strings are getting hung up on the headstock under the (I have no idea what their real name is) screws that hold down the two strings between the machine head and the nut. I've tried an old method of rubbing a pencil on the string where there is contact but it's still not helping out. Any other way to smooth them under that screw?

My suggestion would be this...it's a new guitar yes?? Take it back and have the music store resolve the tunning issues since it is under Waranty. If you bought this online, than you should still take it to a local guitar tech and have them do a set up and resolve your issues..also, they can determine if it is defective and needs to be returned??

Invest a little more money if you really have no idea what your doing before you screw things up..and that can happen! Dan Erlewine has book out about electric guitar setup work...you should purchase it online and study it if you want to do this kind of work...not hard and fun to do.
Good Luck 8)

New strings will take a bit to stretch out too. Also temperature changes will affect it a bit so do some warmups then retune, should be good from there if that's all it is.

I think the Fender "How To" set up guides suggest a light oil where ever metal touches metal. That would include where the "string tees" touch the strings.

In all honesty, you should take it back and see if they'll do a setup on it. It would be hard for me to believe it's the string trees. I've never had to oil them on any of my guitars, and I wouldn't think I would have to on a guitar that didn't have a whammy bar type bridge.

Even when I put new strings on a guitar, after I stretch them, it still takes a couple of days of playing for the strings to be fully stretched and the guitar to stay in tune. You might also think about the windings you have on the guitar when you string it up. I usually only have mine wound around the post about 3-times, and some would say that might be too much. But, it seems fine to me. Make sure the string winds in an exact downward row of winds, and they should stretch properly.

It makes a big difference.
