What do you want to know these were some of the best basses made. The JV still hold great value and the 62 necks kicked but. I think they were for only 2 years and In the late 70's CBS (Fender owner) decided to produce their guitars for cheaper. At these time, US was flooded with Japanese copy of any types of appliances form blenders to washing machines and music industry was no avoided. Tokai, Ibanez appeared on the market with cheap guitars copies.

CBS decided to use factories in Japan for what they asked "cheap" fender guitars, said "Squier Serie". The legend says they sent old parts from stock 50's 60's and 70's to craft the 1st serie during the process of making their own japanese pieces. The very first shipping of Japanese crafted instruments was way beyond expectation and CBS asked the abroad factories to reduce the overall quality of their gear to avoid of concurrence within the Fender company between Japan & US.

Most of that what you wrote isn't true. The JVs weren't produced in the late 70s it was the early 1980s ( 1982-1984 or so). Also the original reason wasn't to produce cheap guitars, it was to produce an import strat that could compete in the market place with the Tokais, Grecos, and Navigators etc... Which weren't exactly cheap copies either. Yes they did make lower end models, but there were also plenty of guitars that were high end ( Nitro Finishes, Nice Alnico pickups, Alder or Sen-Ash bodies etc).

So the label Squier wasn't originally meant to designate a cheaper guitar, it was just to differentiate from the import line and the US domestic stuff. Fender also didn't ask the Japanese Factories to down grade anything, MIJ Squiers were pretty consistent throughout the 80s, Fender just eventually moved from Japan to Korea, China, Indonesia and thats when quality began to take a dip.
