Hello everybody,
I bought a squier affinity strat in summer of 2009. It was my first guitar although I learned how to play on my dads acoustic. Anyways, I'm much more advanced now and think it might be time to move on, however finding a new guitar isn't very easy, there seems to always be some kind of problem, some play good clean but don't do so well with distortion, others do well with distortion but not so good clean. Being a huge Beatle fan I found the epiphone casino and it sounded good clean but had way too much feedback when distorted. I've also looked at some Fender Strats, Teles, the Pawn Shop Mustang, Gibson LP studio. What I want is something that gives me a really good clean tone for Beatles and Byrds stuff but I also want something that will give me enough distortion to play nirvana and foo fighters stuff. Since I like the feel of my squire I was thinking about just adding new pickups to see if I can get the sound that I want. Will that get me closer to the sound I'm looking for or should I just keep saving to get a new guitar? Also I would be grateful if you could give me any pickup suggestions. Thank you and greetings from Mexico.

Pickups would make a world of difference but considering it's a Squier don't spend too much money. I've had good results with GuitarFetish.com. While they admit not the same quality as Seymour or Fender or Gibson I am very pleased with their pickups. I've got a EVH & Highoutput humbucker and just recently got a hot rail (lil' killer) that sounds like a full blown humbucker. Of course it also depends what wood you put the pickup on and the wiring and the amp.

Your whole issue might just be a better amp and effects. With the digital age these new (quality) amps can make anything sound good. I'm not saying go out and do a live concert but in your room it might just be enough.

So now you've got to go back and rethink this. What amp where you using with which guitar you tested and what effects. Maybe you can take your guitar into the same shop and plug it in and see what the difference would be.

You've got a lot of research to do but think of how much fun it will be. I'd also research any cover bands that play the songs you like and check out their gear. Guitar mags are good for that type of info or just Google it.

Good thing it's summer break! Have fun!
