Hope it has a maple neck. I was going to say dump the body but I was just looking at the specs and it says alder. Not bad. Depending on the owners musical inclination I would try and get a Floyd Rose nock off or the real thing if possible. You would have to route the body and drill the neck for a locking nut. Also some good quality humbuckers would be in order. Try and get some vintage Gibsons and mount it sideways like VH? Save the Gibson sticker for the headstock! (I took an old single coil pickguard and cut it out for a humbucker. I left the bottom one diagonal and mounted my EMG's.) I still haven't found a body for it. If there is any money left over you could spend it on tuners and a couple of cans of spray paint if it is not a sunburst. I'll leave the design up to you but I'm thinking black with white stripes. I don't know why.

Have fun,

Not as much as you might think.

First, I'd lose the pickups. I'd go with with a Seymour Duncan JB Jr. Pickup in the Bridge and a Texas Tone in the neck position. (For the middle pickup, leave it as is or swap up for a better Fender pickup..standard.)

Next, I'd have jumbo frets installed....they make a huge difference in playability.

As for the Bridge? Eh, I'd say just go without the tremolo bar. (Just block it out ala Clapton or better yet, just leave it alone). If you're worried about it staying in tune, then a better nut and some tuning keys outta do the trick. (But then again, none of that is needed!)

I think between the pickups and the jumbo frets you'd have a mighty fine-sounding and great playin' instrument...

Yeah, personally I would just save the money for the mods and put it towards either one of the Standard or Vintage Modified series Strats as Affinitys are okay, but depending on what you plan to mod, they can be a bit of a hassle. For example, I think Affinity bodies are not as thick as the Standard series, and the Standard series has more Fender-ish specs. So if you were thinking of putting a new trem or bridge on it as a mod, that may be hard since most of the aftermarket ones are more for the Fender specs. Just a thought....especially because modding can burn up money quickly, and you may end up spending more on the mods than what you spent on the guitar....

Aww....you're no fun!!!

This gives me an idea though...

Why doesn't Squire do a team up with manufactuers or a group of luthiers with the intentions of releasing "modified" guitars??

Example: Squire teams up with Seymour Duncan, EMG or DiMarzio for a limited edition customized guitar. Or, a Squire is given to a world-renowned luthier who modifies it..and then Squire releases a limited run to the public.

You could even go further with Squire teaming up with Apple Computers for a guitar loaded with active electronics...

Dude, stop giving out so many free ideas. People are going to make money on you!

Fender doesn't have to go too far to get a world renouned luthier. Most of them are working or have worked at the custom shop.

Will they?

Naaahhhh....I mean if you think about it, that whole idea is very similar to how Toyota marketed their Scion vehicles when they came out a couple of years back. (They'd show the car, then show it with a bunch of modifications.)

IN any case, I'm probably going to get a Squire at some point. It will depend on how much I'll be travelling in the next couple of years. The thought of something happening to my HSS or my '68 reissue which has a ton of custom work is starting to worry me.

(But...not a typical Squier! I think to be obtuse I'm going to have it re-fretted, the bridge blocked out...literally...and I may have JB Jr's installed all around to make it an ideal rock and roll tone monster.)

You might want to hold out for the new Master Series. They have a Gibson style bridge and pickups which could be what you are seeking. Also there is the Vintage Modified as another possibility.

I can't wait to try one with those fat pickups out but I have no plans on buying a guitar without a tremolo. I already have one that I'm dying to route for a Floyd Rose but I'm scared to mess it up.

Later,
