Got the Squire about a week ago. A few days ago I noticed that the frets on strings 1, 2 and 3 have trouble registering. Some of them won't register at all. Others only register when I mash the strings *hard* against the frets. I thought since the frets trigger based on electical contact the strings would need to just touch the frets. Is this expected behavior? I'm wondering if there are loose connections inside the neck and if I should contact Fender to get it serviced under warranty.

If it plays anything like a real guitar the notes are picked up using a pickup. Cant say that I never seen this controller. but in a real guitar and I looked at the pics of this. You may want to adjust the pick up hieght if you can do that. Or get an exchange.

The stumming is detected by the pickup. However each fret on each string has an independent signal. You can see a fret being pressed in the game without strumming the string. The guitar can also send MIDI codes for each fret press.

Hmm, I can honestly say that I have never seen or handled one of those controlers but they sound really cool. Sorry I wasnt much help. I hope you can contact the correct channels at fender to get it working or replaced. Did you ever get in contact with any one at Fender? I know that you had another thread trying to get a hold of some one.

Just to be clear you are talking about the frets registering, not the strums?
If it is the frets the contacts (?) underneath the fretboard may not be aligned properly. Is it all of the frets that dont register, or just a few? If it is all of them then you should just take it to Best Buy and exchange it, no reason to take apart a guitar you can take back to the store.

If it is just a few frets that aren't detected, try pressing the string against the fret and wiping side to side, almost like a bend. It seems like there is a protective film or oxidation that is found on the frets in new RB Squiers. It appears that the frets rely on a good electrical contact with the strings for fret detection. Most people find that the fret detection is quite reliable and the wiping is about the only "service" that is needed in all but rare cases.

Yes. It is a handful of frets that are not registering.

Bending the frets to the side seems to make some of them more reliable. I haven't tried scaping the frets to get off any oxidized material.

Fender consumer support told me to adjust the pots under the battery cover and if that didn't fix it then to contact a service center.

I hate to contradict the rep at Fender, but adjusting the pots won't do anything to the frets, thats just for strum recognition. Just rub the strings back and forth like someone else said.

Rubbing the strings across the frets did indeed fix the problem.

hmmm. I wonder if oxidation will be a continuing problem? At least the fix is easy.
