Hi All,
My first Guitar was a Squier Affinity HSS.
After owning it about 6 months, bought a new American Standard, Fender Strat.(Sienna/Ash body).

As much as I love the "Real" Strat, I find , more and more, I'm turning back to the Squier !.

The Tone on Am.Std. I think is outstanding but truthfully, I find it less playable than the Squier.

Always had a problem with the neck profile (Modern C ?) . Got little hands I supose.
Squier neck , for me is dream, nice and skinny .

Ok, sorry for waffling on, to the point.

Why can I strum the Squire so smoothly and literally, be aware of all 6 strings having contact, as opposed the Am. Std Strat, which feels so "lumpy" when strummed. It feels as if the strings are at different heights above the pick ups. Eyeballing the two Guitars, only difference I can see is Squire Strings sit higher off the Frets and pick ups.

What dictates the ability of a Guitar, in terms of set up, to enable smooth, even strum patterns.

I'm a relative newbe so if I haven't made much sense, apologies.

Thanks and would appreciate a little guidance please. :?

A lot has to do with how the guitar is set up. It sounds like the action on the Squier is a little higher than the Fender. That may be part of it. Also, one neck shape may feel better than the other to your hands.

Setups are very subjective and very much personal preference. I suggest using this page to setup your Fender: http://www.fender.com/support/articles/stratocaster-setup-guide

This page will give you a good starting point. From there you can adjust until it feels good to you.

You really can't hurt the guitar setting it up yourself as long as you pay attention to what you are doing.

Hope that helps.

Thanks woolbrig. It seems, after reading additional material, that typically Rhythm Guitars have their strings set higher than those used primarily for Lead Guitar .

I guess this works for me as the Squier will be used for Rhythm practice and the Am. std. for the Lead type play.

Learn something everyday it seems. Thanks again,

Cheers,

Chicken Lips.
