I recently put a tremolo on my VM Jazzmaster (posted a pic on another thread), but there were still a couple of things I wasn't happy with.
  1. Didn't like the hole under the pickguard showing.
  2. Didn't like the way the volume cut the tone so quickly when you turned it down.
  3. I thought the standard Jazzmaster controls were cool

So decided to correct all 3. Here is what I did.

  1. With the existing pickguard as a pattern, made a new pickguard pattern out of some plywood.
  2. After a practice run, bit the bullet and cut the pickguard.
  3. Wired it up with the standard Jazzmaster controls.

While not perfect, I think it turned out pretty good for my first attempt at making a pickguard.

Thanks, I know what you mean about the jack. If I ever repaint it I'll fill it in and put it where it belongs!

I think it turned out very well. I really like Jazzmasters and love the aesthetics of the maple neck on the Squier. Is the finish translucent, or is it opaque paint like a lot of other Squier "Blondes"?

Thanks! The paint is translucent, but I couldn't get it to show in the pics. It's very subtle.

How much more did you have to sink into it to bring it up to Jazzmaster standards?

Wow! :o More than I thought. I bought the pieces over a couple of months so I ddin't realize how much I spent. I'm sure I could have done it cheaper by buying used parts, but I went all out.

$73.10 - Tremolo
$8.48 - Tremolo Arm
$55 - Bridge
$77 - Wiring/Pots/Brackets
$3.50 -Knobs
$6.94 - Pup Covers
$15.95 - Pickguard Material
269.97 - Total

Still much cheaper than a Fender Jazzmaster, and I'm really happy with the results and had a lot of fun doing it! :)

I made a couple of additional updates. Aged white tips on the switch & trem and replaced the bridge with a Schaller Roller Bridge. The strings high e string was really close to the edge of the fretboard, and the new bridge allows you to adjust string spacing. Now the spacing is perfect! :)

Cream is a little darker than aged white. The color also seems to vary a some depending on the maker.
