hey all,

never posted here in this area of the forums, many of you may know me from the other parts like the Fender Custom Shop and Strat section.

anyway, I've been meaning to share a project my lead guitarist and I started/finished this past summer, codenamed "Operation Pimp Dat Squier". the goal was to take a cheap Squier Bullet Strat (purchased for 15.00 from a friend who stopped playing) and turn it into a wicked looking/sounding instrument without spending much money.

the original guitar was finished in Black, but our friend spray painted over it in red (without removing the original finish. didn't do a great job...)

we stripped the finishes with a power sander and got it down to the bare wood. after sanding more by hand, we applied 4 coats of Valspar Gloss Black.

while letting the body hang and dry, we started on the neck. we sanded the front/back of the headstock down and ditched the logo. we decided to leave the bezels in, and spray the headstock with 4 coats of Valspar Gloss White.

while letting the neck dry with the body, we sanded the pickguard and sprayed it with Valspar Gloss Black.

now that the body was dry, we began masking off the stripes. we were aiming originally to do a black/white version of George Lynch's Charvel or Satchal (of Steel Panther)'s Kramer, but we decided to do our own take on the idea.

after masking was done, we applied 4 coats of Gloss White.

we let the body sit and dry for about 3-4 days, then peeled off the tape, revealing this-

as you can tell by the title of the thread, it came out with more of a Zebra Stripe pattern than a tiger, so the name Zebracaster was born.

now that the body and neck were done, we decided to focus on electronics. since we play Classic Rock (see our myspace page in my sig to hear us) we decided to go the EVH route and cut into the pickguard, routing out the bridge pickup for a Humbucker.

Image

we used an old Gibson 498T that was leftover from when my lead player swapped pickups in his Les Paul. the neck pickup would be a standard squier pickup, and the middle pickup would be an old '80s Vintage Reissue strat pickup I had laying around.

after it was all wired up, I give you the finished product:

so there you have it. in total, we spent about 30.00 on this project, as most of the electronics used were spares or leftover parts.

we have another project in the works for this summer, which will be a take on the classic "rising sun" design.

Nice work! You did a very original B&W that looks like EVH would be proud to own. I too am a big EVH fan and did some similar pickguard work on a B&W which I'm still working on.

I like your music and band very much. Not very often you find up and coming classic rock bands anymore. Especially where I live. Good to know Rock hasn't died yet. You should look out for the Fender battle of the bands. It could give your band national noteriety plus a lot of gear.

Keep up the great work and send us updates on your projects.

thanks man! yeah I'll make another thread when we start the next project.

We're thinking about Fender's battle. we just got national attention as the winners of School Jam USA (a search for the next big teen band sponsored by NAMM) and will be performing over at MusikMesse in April. our schedule is soo crazy right now  that'd be wicked though.
