I just bought an Affinity Tele because I own some property in the woods and I don`t want to take my good Am. Tele Deluxe there for numerous reasons. My question is, I`m not that happy with the pick ups in the Affinity but I only paid $180 for it so you can`t expect it to sound that great. I was thinking about changing the pups but the ones I priced are $150 and another $50 for instillation. Is it worth $200 to mod the guitar when it only cost $180 ? I was wondering if anyone made changes similar to this and if their happy with the way it sounds ? I would appreciate any input before I decide what to do with it. Thanks...Joe

Since you have more than one guitar I would recomend doing it yourself. Just slowly remove the tension from the strings and get some good screwdrivers. Hold the screw end with one hand to keep it from slipping and damaging the finish. Get yourself a prewired pickguard (loaded). Shop around and spend the $50 installation money to get better quality. Don't spend a ton of money on this guitar.

I usually buy the pickup I use most and replace it. Simply follow the wires and replace with the new pickup. You need to learn to solder. It's not hard, just don't burn the parts.

This is all part of owning guitars that you will have to eventually learn if you plan on owning a lot of guitars.

Thanks for the reply. I`ve been around guitars most of my life but never did any repairs myself. I started playing when I was 10, I`m 62 now so I`ve had numerous guitars over the years. This guitar is a cheap knock off and I really don`t like it or the way it sounds. But I`m not taking a $2000 Tele to a place where it might get damaged. A loaded pick guard is a good idea and I`m going to check it out. I just don`t want to spend more on pick ups than the guitar is worth but the pups in there now are the pits. I`ll shop around and see what I can find. Thanks again

Here is a good source for pickups that are inexpensive yet decent quality. I've had great luck with them and they don't break the bank.

Thanks for that link Woolbrig. I just sent them a note asking which pick ups they recommend to get that Tele twang and yet good for Blues too.

Although GF is very customer friendly they don't do recommendations. You might get lucky and find a wav file for the pickup but I haven't seen too many. You can google around maybe someone has a review. I'm going to have to put mines up on youtube. I'm pretty satisfied with the EVH and HIOUTPUT humbuckers. I just bought a Lil' Killer hot rail. Can't wait to hear it.

I ordered 2 pickups and a new switch. I liked being able to hear the pickups before buying them, nice feature. The switch was weak so I got a new one of those too.

Congrats, which ones did you order? You did good on the switch, they go bad easy. One of my strat switches only works on middle and neck. If I pull on it the bridge works. But I can't do that and strum at the same time.

I got a kit for $15 that brings the caps, three pots, the switch and output jack. All I have to do is figure out how to wire and hope it works.

Keep us up to date on your project.

For the neck pick up I got the Hard Vintage Overwound and for the bridge I got the Pure vintage pick up. I`m going to install them Monday or Tuesday and I`ll let you know how they sound.

There was a change of plans, and pick ups. I didn`t put the pups in that I got from Guitarfetish, I decided to put in a pair of Fender `52 Tele upgrades. This Squier don`t sound like a cheap guitar anymore, the upgrade was the best thing I did. I`m going to put the other pick ups I got on Craigslist and try to sell them. At least it sounds decent now and when you turn the volume up it blows you out of the house. Thanks for all the help and advice.

Or you could get another tele to mount them on :) Maybe you can find one cheap on ebay.

Glad it worked out.

Not a bad idea but I`m not in the market for another cheap guitar. The only reason I got this one was because I`m not taking my good Tele to my cabin. Actually, I`m looking into a 52 Hot Rod Tele for my guitar. I put the GFS pups on craigslist yesterday maybe I can sell them there. Thanks again

I forget to mention GF has a good customer service return policy. You could get credit for something else. I returned a twisted neck and they were very accomodating. They only work by e-mail.

Good luck with your endeavor. Hope you get that hot rod.

Thanks for that info, maybe I`ll exchange them for tuners if they let me.
