I have been following this on Harmonix's forum for the last couple of days. Some people have been able to get the strum tracking to improve by adjusting string or pickup height, but several have indicated that it didn't work well until they went behind the battery compartment to adjust potentiometers for the strings. Theoretically, these control the sensitivity for the strum detection.

I haven't done anything to mine yet besides tune it, and it does work relatively well. But then again, it won't pick up strums if I strum any way except moderately to hard. On the off chance that any Fender staff hang around this forum, I wanted to ask if adjusting these pots is considered a modification that would void the warranty? Should I take the guitar to an authorized service location to have them adjust it? Would they know how?

Odds are they're safe to adjust.
My reasoning?
If they weren't meant to be tampered with they would have covered them either with a tamper resistant sticker, or the red or black goo that manufacturers use to keep people from messing with factory adjustments.
Also there would be some kind of port to hook into to test the readings of each pot.
Almost every device that has to take readings through the air, like the pickup on the Squier does, will be affected by temperature changes. These things need to be dialed in to be right on the money, and are set at the factory to get as close to where they need to be as they can. I'm sure they'd love to be able to reset them once they're through the shipping process, but they can't do that without some long arms.
Unless you break one by loosening or tightening it too much there's be no way to know it's been touched.
Obviously if your worried you'll want to err on the side of caution. But if you placed a call to Fender tech support and had already reset the strings and pickup, they'll more than likely have you set the pots. while on the phone with them.
But then again I could be wrong.
