I greatly appreciate any input you may have! I am a total beginner, so going in store to test things out really hasn't been productive.

Okay, to cut to the chase, this is the type of music I will like to work on being able to play (just random selection)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSNDRgs4KCc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L93-7vRfxNs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogMNV33AhCY
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvUgfOTgqYI

So, more so light rock, pop, maybe will do some R&B? A lot of the "indie" too I guess. Just not heavy rock/metal stuff, that isn't what I intend to be playing.

Now, am I right in thinking, strats would suit this style more than tele/Les Pauls? I am sure all of them are able to play this type, but if you could have 1 guitar, which would you pick to play this type of music?

On the strat side - I had in mind the Squier Standard Strat/Squier Standard Strat (HSS). But the HSS model, doesn't have a control for the bridge, so is it really worth it? SSS or HSS, which would suit my style more?

Have I gone on the wrong side totally and I should be looking into Les Pauls/Tele's/HSH or others?

Would greatly appreciate any help. This is driving me crazy!

Well...after listening to you youtube samples I can't honestly say that they screamed either Les Paul or Strat...

In my honest opinion...I would say go with an Ibanez style guitar...

Just a couple ideas.

Thanks a bunch for the suggestions. Is there any reason why that setup would suit me more (from what I see, its HSH)?

If not those, would you say I am better off just looking for other HSH guitars rather than SSS/HH/HSS? What does the HSH/those Ibanez have which make it better suited to me - not that I am against them at all, they look good, it is just to become more knowledgeable (you seem like a guy who knows his stuff ). From the youtube clips of those Ibanez, it did sound very heavy, like metal-style, if you know what I mean? But I guess this could have been the settings I guess?

Thanks in advance.

Ibanez are not necassarily just for metal...just as Fenders are not just for blues/classic rock...just as Gibsons are not just for big rock riffs. The most important thing is finding something that is comfortable to you.

In the music clips you played I heard...in my opinion...alot of modern shred influence in terms of tone. I was thinking about Joe Satarani and Steve Vai. The guitars I suggested are low priced beginner style versitile guitars...I would also consider PRS SE models as well.

I would suggest that you find a players tone that you believe is close to the tones you want in your head and find something similar...note that this is not necassarily your favorite player or music. I love the tones that David Gilmour gets out of a strat and that influenced my choice to be primarily a strat player. That being said I am actually not much of a Pink Floyd fan.

The bottom line is that you should play a bunch of diufferent guitars with a bunch of different amps until you find your tone...that could take a while so have fun. If you are not comfortable doing that, ask the sales staff to demo some stuff.

Yep Ibanez makes a nice guitar also. They tend to be heavier in weight than a strat, just something to consider..

If I am really not into classical/blues/jazz/country etc

but am more into pop/rock/electric pop/electric rock/indie pop&rock/j-pop

though not looking for heavy metal/heavy rock (think metalica/slipknot etc)

I guess an SSS isn't really for me right?

Would HH/HSH be more suitable for me then? Is HSS workable, but just not as suited as a HH/HSH setup?

What would you say is the key difference between a HH/HSH setup as well.

It's not all about pickups...although HB's are a more modern sound...but single coils can sound very modern as well...it really comes down to the player...go play a bunch of guitars and sooner or later you will find one that feels and sounds right.

Don't pigeon hole yourself by only trying a certain type of pickup config.

After having thought about it - i think you are right, that Ibanez suit me more.

I am looking to get a HH fixed bridge Ibanez, either the lower end GRGR121ex/GART60 or maybe a bit more and go for a RGR321EX.

Do you think not getting one with a tremelo will make much difference in being able to play that sort of music? I heard that I should especially avoid floating bridges, as a beginner.

I had an SZ520QM before, though it was a weighty axe it was awesome. If you look at them you have to get the older style with the contoured heel where the back of the neck meets the body. That design changed in later models.
