Hi, just bought a new squire bullet srat. I put new xl strings on it right away and tuned it. When I play a A chord or a Bm the chord sounds off, it even changes pitch abit depending on how hard I press down on the strings. It is my imagination or are the frets just a little too high? It is really noticable and anyonying...
Thanks
KR :?

Sounds like the intonation may need to be adjusted. Either look up how to do that or bring it to a repairman/tech to get it done for you.

Hi, the intonation seems pretty good, even from the factory it was almost right on. It seems to me that the frets seem high on it. If you press the strings just a hair behind the frets the chord sounds ok, If you press on the strings exactly in the center between the frets and press hard the chords sounds distorted, you can actually hear the chord slightly change as you change the pressure on the strings.

The intonation may still need to be adjusted a bit, but you may need to see if any local store or repair people in your area do "fret levelling" which it sounds as if you may need one of those perhaps....

Does xl mean extra light strings? I've found that with lighter strings I could squeeze chords out of tune with my left hand. After trying a few different gauges, I decided to use heavier strings. I settled on 11-50 for a good balance in tension and tone (standard tuning), but 10-46 didn't squeeze out of tune so much, either.

Hi, I did try heavier strings, it seemed to maybe help just a little. I did some reading and found out that if the tremolo bridge is not tight enough this can happen. I took the back cover off, and maybe tightned it about 2 turns and it seems much better now.... :)
