Today I was at my local Musictorium, and I am looking at either a Yamaha Pac112j or a Squire CV 50 or 60 strat. So today I played with both the 50's and 60's version on a Mustang 3 amp. Now when I chose a single pup on either guitar, there was a noise. I assume it was the 60hz hum, but with a master of 3, and the guitar volume at 8-10, this was NOT a hum. It sounded to me, like static-y noise. I can hum, I cant replicate this noise. It happened on both guitars, so its not just an isolated problem, but I was wondering exactly why this happened. I didnt want to ask anyone at the shop as they all seemed to have customers, and I was not purchasing today, only testing, and so I didnt wanna make anyone miss a sale. So thank you for any info.

Aside from that, I felt very comfortable with either of these guitars, and I am leaning towards them. I will need to play a little more, and I like the idea of a bucker on a Yamaha, but Im dreaming of a CV strat now.

I have the Mustang III and a CV 60's strat. Of course you know that there will always be a hum, especially with single coils on any strat. The hum could be lots of issues. Guitar stores can have so many things plugged into the same circuit at their stores with so much background noise, the cables can be bad etc and lights etc, there are literally dozens of ways that any single coil will buzz.

My 60's Strat certainly will have a little bit of a buzz when I am facing the amp (not more than any other single coil), but none when I am facing away or at an angle. My Strat sounds just perfect through the Mustang III and is as noiseless as I need it to be.

I'd love to talk you into that CV strat over the Yamaha. My 60's is my favorite guitar right now. I just love both the sound and feel of it. It sustains better than any strat that I have ever played. If you like the feel of a thinner neck, I just feel that the quality and sound of the CV 60's is unmatchable for the price. Just amazing guitar in my opinion. I would also say... if you get the CV Strat, and after a while really wish you had a humbucker, you can grab a Seymour Duncan JB Jr. for $60 used on ebay. The JB Jr. with the tone and the sustain that you get from the CV strat would be so much better than any stock humbucker that Yamaha would put in their pacifica's.

Just my thoughts...

Well, I already emailed my local musictorium and asked them to bring in a CV 50's for me. I like the 60, but the 50's just felt more at home in my hands than the 60. So my mind has already been changed! Worst comes to worst, I play for a year, upgrade axes, and mod the crap out of this and put buckers in it! Seems like something Id do.

Anyways. Yeah it wasnt a hum. I know the 60hz hum, I watched some youtube vids OF the 60hz hum, and what I heard was more feedbacky dirty power or some such. So Im not worried about it now, as I am sure it wasnt the sound of coils. Ground wire, cable, dirty switch, bad mains, something. So I am confident enough to grab my CV 50 and Mustang 3.

You won't be disappointed with the Mustang III either. What an amazing amp! I am having so much fun with it. I learned a new song the other day and could have spent all night finding new tones to play it through. So many tones to choose from. So many really good effects. I am absolutely addicted to it.

I totally know what you mean. Being new to guitar, I do not know much. But I know that the fact that the 3 is as easy and chock full of features, those times when i get impatient or start to get bored with learning something that day, I can always just noodle with tones and find something brand new. I was sitting in the music store and I totally just zoned out on the amp. I played for about 20 minutes, and then my GF sat down adn started noodling around, and I just sat on the floor for another 15 going through amps, effects, and trying different things and sounds. I dont own either yet I already love both the guitar and amp. SO STOKED!!!

Yes there will be a hum with single coil pickups on the CV guitars. You fans either buy it and possibly drop in a humbucker and that should eliminate the hum. Or you could look into something like the Vintge Modified series or for a few dollars more a Fender Blacktop. Just some food for thought. In my opinion, it plays a litter better and has better tone than the CV series.

Flourescent lighting can cause a helacious noise from single coils, sometimes it's everywhere in stores.
