I voted Fender too. And for me, my next guitar purchase will be a Squier Affinity Tele in Butterscotch Blonde.

Gil 8)

That's the one I bought and I LOVE it!!!

All things being equal I would have voted for Fender but in reality there is a cost associated with everything and I think the value/quality proposition of Squier beats out Fender - I vote for Squier.

I voted for Squier.

And here's why.....

Be it Fender or Squier, that guitar is going to get modified as soon as I buy it. This will include new pickups the neck and bridge position, jumbo frets (blame it on your Highway Series, Fender...it's a perfect fit for the Strat)...and yes, just to be a little precocious I'll probably buy a black abalone pickguard to install on that standard black left-handed Squier that you see in so many stores.

The irony is that the bridge in that model is BETTER than the MiM Fender strats.

So...if I'm going to do that many modifications just to get the guitar I want, what's the point in spending hundreds of extra dollars on a name when at the end of the day, a luthier/repairman (and I'll do some of the work) is going to go over the whole instrument with a fine tooth comb?

Squier's the choice for folks who don't like their strats or other guitars stock...

Now THAT'S a great marketing approach for Squier. That they're not only a great beginner guitar but a great platform (or blank canvas if you will) for more experienced players to build their perfect guitar. Especially since even though a lot of people mod their Fenders I don't think Fender wants to be thought of as a brand that NEEDS to be modded to get the right sound.

With Squier (and Epiphone for that matter) on the other hand, everyone seems to take it for granted that you change the hardware, pickups, etc. in order to get the guitar you really want. There's a real DIY feeling associated with Squier.

And that also fits in with the Toyota/Scion comparison that was made prior. Scions may be a younger, cheaper brand, but most people mod theirs like crazy - to the point where there's a modding culture associated with them that doesn't exist with Toyota.

A Squire can very easily be every bit the guitar any Fender ever was.
That is a stone fact. I could writ a book...probably should.

I have personally owned/kept /traded/lplayed/fussed over/re-wired/re-fretted/changed pickups etc...etc.... on at least FOUR HUNDRED..yes that's right 400 guitars (a conservative estimate) I have about twenty currently in the corral.

......In that bunch there have been many vintage Gibsons...Fenders Oddballs plus new models re-issues.....Mutts....Mongrels ...Expensive vs cheap ..Gibson vs Epiphone....Fender vs Squire

A good or bad guitar can come with any name on it either way....

I recently traded a 600.00 Lite Ash Tele for a new Squire Custom Tele wioth Duncan Designed P90's in it.... The pickups were garbage but the guitar is great..... I replaced the stock PUs with Lollar P90s and a few other minor tweaks....What a great guitar!

If you are a player and not a collector or poseur looking for a trophy "rock star" piece.....(and provided that you really have a fairly deep bag of guitar you play) then you don't need any name to convince you/

....You just need a quiet place to play and feel the guitar unplugged all by itself and it will tell you whether you want it or not.

You'll find them with any name on them and any price....Pay as much or as little as you want...it doesn't matter....Name Has almost NOTHING to do with anything. Believe it or not!

PS

Some very major players (who can have anything they want) have played Squires

Since you're a noob, get out there and play as many Squiers and Fenders as you can. Yes, there will be some differences at times, but there might not be as many as you might think. I have played for about 20 years, and many of the Fenders I have played were no better than my Squier Standards, so why spend a few hundred or more extra just to get Fender's name on the headstock? In reality, it doesn't matter what the headstock says if you can't play.

You said it yourself...you're a NOOB

It's hard for noobs...I'm sure.... Since they don't know anything..
It's Ok not to know anything, but it's kinda ugly when you don't know anything but pretend that you do... and feel compelled to run your mouth about it... it's worse than just being a noob...it's a sign that your not very intelligent ..and that's putting it politely

Also since noobs not only don't know anything, but also can't really play the guitar...the only thing they can puff themselves up about is their petty materialistic prized possesions.... having a multi-thousand dollar custom shop Fender or Gibson...(or just any lousy mongrel that's got "Fender" stencilled on it) is kinds like actually having a rock star living in your house.

From here, if one were to engage in further discusion with the likes of you.... would be as stupid as arguing about who's daddy can beat who.

With computer controlled machining it's pretty much mostly a level playing field as far as the important stuff goes...(like the neck and frets etc..)
and sometimes cheap pickups actually sound better for certain applications

A good musician could easily take a new Squire or Epiphone and a decent amp and have jaws dropping..... they could certainly smoke you and your ignorance in a New York minuite.

Yeah....Laugh it up.

Tell you what...

I could go out, pay 300 dollars for a left handed Squire, dump 500 dollars of modifications into it and I would put that guitar up against ANY high end Fender guitar that would typically cost thousands more.

So who's the retarded monkey? You tell me...

I voted Fender just cause of personal preference. The Squires that I have tried have sounded awful and was just not comfortable to play...I don't know too much about guitar modifications that much, and I don't think I have ever tried a modified squire guitar, so that is definitely something I must try...just out of curiosity what is the major difference in specifications between a squire guitar and a fender guitar?

The Fender specs and Squier specs are pretty much similar, what is different is the quality in parts and the costs of labor involved...

Now this is one of the best points I've heard yet!!!!!

As far as the "noob" that posted above(dflac1026), give yourself about twenty years of nothing but the high priced fenders, and when you finally find yourself and your looking for a particular sound, and you have become bored with nothing but the American Fenders, you'll start looking around for something else..........
In other words: "when your skill level becomes greater than your ego, your eyes will open"

I have a Korean built Cort (of all things!) ...I don't evenlike the name "Cort" ...whata stupid name!!

Problem is.... the guitar is one of the best archtops I've ever played.... It's an LCS-1 "Larry Coryell" signature model..... It actually beat a Gibson ES-175 in a "Shootout" in Guitar Player Mag....

So stupid name or not. It stays in my collection.

Personally I think the correct motto for Gibson or Fender should be............."YOU CAN BY BETTER, BUT YOU CAN'T PAY MORE."

I will say this......I also play drums, and one of the few examples of a major mfgr of US built musical products who still provide fantastic quality along with a very competative price is ZILDJIAN.

If your play drums and are buying cymbals look into them ..... A fantastic company and a pleasure to deal with ....they deserve all the buisiness you can send their way!
