Hi, I'm another newbie here with what is probably a coulpe of what seems to some as stupid questions.I have a 83-84 Squier Stratocaster with the serial code SQ55875. It is black with black trim with a maple neck. I was thinking of changing to white trim to look like the Clapton guitar on the "Slowhand" album. I was wondering if this would affect the value of the guitar? Also the hole for the tremolo handle is stripped. Is using a heli-coil a good fix? Any help on these questions will be appreciated. THANKS.

I wouldn't worry about resale in a Squier. You won't get much. Either way keep your old pickguard. The new one's holes will not be the same and you will have to redrill some of them. (No one will know). As far as your trem try whatever works to get a thread in there but remember the metal is very soft. (Don't overtighten anything in a guitar.)

As I recall Eric Clapton used a piece of wood to stop the trem from moving. He didn't use the arm. So maybe that might be an option. A new trem can be had for $25 or less if you shop around. Another option.

Good luck and keep in touch,

I took my Squier in to my local Squier dealer and music store for a tune-up. He offered me $600 on the spot if I was interested in selling it  . He also told me that the market was soft now and that I shouldn't sell for less than $1000. So don't be quick to modify these older Squiers. If you do, keep all the original parts. :D

P.S. Hey I found that a '72 Strat pickguard fits with no mods. :o

Sounds like you got some good advice and a nice offer. I'd hang on to it and get another to mod. Just me.

Hope you enjoy whatever you decide to get. :D

$600 for a Squier, it must be a Japanese manufactured one.
