Hey guys,

My son who has a Squier strat, is looking for a good bridge pickup for playing metal and wants to fit one himself. Any suggestions? It will be a gift for his birthday...

Thanks a lot.

It would help to know whether it has single coil pickups or humbuckers.

Single coils:
Dimarzio: Fast Track2, Super Distortion S
Seymour Duncan: Hot Rails, Cool Rails, Hot Stack

Humbuckers:
Dimarzio: X2N, Super Distortion
Seymour Duncan: Invader, Duncan Distortion, Dimebucker

My personal opinion is that Seymour Duncans usually have more sizzle than Dimarzio for all out metal. Hot Rails are a big favorite with metal players, so are all 3 humbuckers mentioned.

Dimarzios in my opinion are quieter and have more Bass balls. Some metal players prefer that thick chunky sound. If that's what he likes more, then I would probably choose a Dimarzio.

Hey thanks. The guitar has SCs so something that fits the SC slot would be best.

His guitar should be routed for hss configuration. If it is I recommend the Dimarzio super distortion, but all the pick-ups already listed are good. I converted my Fender HWY 1 from a SSS to a HSS configuration using the Super Distortion. He may need a new pickguard with a HSS configuration.

I have always thought true humbuckers give a better tone than sc sized ones. But that is just my opinion.

For a SC guitar, I'm sure he'll be more than happy with the Seymour Duncan Hot rails.

One of my very favorite pickups of all time too. I'm using Super Distortions in 2 of my guitars that get used quite a bit lately.. And for Reggae.

Despite what people might say, they are pretty darn good in the clean channel as well.

Hey thanks guys for all the suggestions. We'll probably go for the SD Hot Rails - they seem pretty good.

I'll let you know how it sounds in a while. Once again, Cheers!
