I am going to buy a new guitar well..my first electric for that matter...So now my big question is which one ? I have narrowed it down to an higher end Squier or an Epiphone les Paul CUSTOM...
Squier is a little cheaper but i dont mind spending $700 for the Epiphone..
Epiphone would win hands down just the thing is that out of my 10 fav songs of all time...5 are by pink floyd..so i think u can understand my dilemma...Would floyd sound horrible on an epiphone ?
Which one should i get and any good amps u have in mind ?

If you have $700, look at the Fender Highway One's

Check out Criagslist and you could get both for the $700 for the Epi alone...easily

Floyd sounds good played on any instrument so long as it is played well.

I have a squier strat, an epi SG with humbuckers and an epi Lespaul with P90's. All three are fine, quality, instruments but sound so different not because of the name on it but becasue of the different pickups.

www.gilmourish.com gives a run down on trying to get Gilmour's tone, he even has suggestions for a budget rig that includes a squier. It takes more than just the guitar but a squier is a good starting point.

If you do not mind spending $700 for an Epiphone, why not spend that money on either a Highway 1 or an American Special? Save a couple hundred more and you have yourself a Fender Standard. A couple hundred more and you have enough for a Gibson Les Paul.

May I suggest you go and play or get a feel for the different guitars that are out there. Squier
Fender
Epiphone
Gibson
LTD
ESP
Charvel
Jackson
BC Rich
Dean
Schecter
Breedlove

There are all just names. Feel them, touch them, play them. Do not buy on name, but on tone, feel, and style.

if the epiphone has one of the hb's coil tapped then you could get the best of both worlds... is still look at a strat tho...

Most Les Paul's are heavy Which might not mean much until your standing up playing for 4 hrs. A Strat is very versatle and with the stacked humbuckers available more options appear. A Squire Deluxe is a very nice guitar for about $280 that leaves money for a decent amp. Very Important GOOD GUITAR + CHEAP AMP = CRAPPY SOUND!!! The main thing is to get a decent setup 1st then start refining gear as you define YOUR SOUND. Some people never get the sound they wanted when they started, The good one's get the sound other people drool over. 8)

I have more experience with Squier than Epiphone, but from my experience, the Epi build quality was better, but the Squier sounded so much better. As I said thought I have only ever played one or two Epi's so I cant really be too definitive. Also, I have to agree with the opinion that the cheaper Squier would leave some money over for a good amp or pedal.

Hope this helps,
Drew :)

I'm not going to say which is better.......I have 2 of each and love all 4 of them. They each have a different voice, I use them for different songs. I just love going into my music room and spending 5 minutes trying to decide which one to play first. Like a kid in a candy store. If I need more than 5 minutes to decide, I pick up my Fender Custom Classic. That one's the final answer!

I recently purchased an Epi Les Paul Traditional Pro in Ebony w/cream binding, that has the Epiphone versions of the 57 classic and the Burstbucker 3 in the bridge. I love the way it sounds, and looks with the open Zebra coils. It also has coil splitting via push/pull volume pots, and let me tell you, you will not get strat sounds via the coil splitting with the stock pickups.

I bought it to "replace" my Squier Affinity Strat, whose pickups were annoying me with the hum from the single coils. However, after playing the Epi Les paul for a month, I picked up the Strat and realized how much thinner the neck was and how easy it was to play, so I (more recently) bought a Dimarzio Fast track pre-loaded, solderless pickguard to drop into it and now it sounds better than the Epi, alot more power. With the Dimarzio setup I basically have a HSH setup.

I plan on upgrading the Epi's pickups in the future with a Dimarzio PAF pro (or Joe) in the neck and an Air Norton (or Fred) in the bridge..
Also, FIRST POST

If you really want a Les Paul style guitar, I would forgo the Epi and get an Agile Les Paul clone, you will get a much better guitar and still save money. You can see the Agile guitars at www.rondomusic.com.

If you want a Strat, I would seriously look at the Squier Classic Vibe 60's Strat.. You get it for $350 and then put the best pickups you can find in it and new locking tuners and you have a great guitar and money left over. I did that, and the pickups I used were Seymour Duncan Hand-Wired Antiquity II Hot Texas pickups. They sound amazing. I put locking tuners and a solid steel trem block in and I have one incredible guitar. You can get a lot of bang for the buck if you go Squier or Agile.

Good luck,

TJ

I would go for a Fender Deluxe Player Strat. I have one and spent around the same amount as you would for your Epiphone. I love David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, and have acheived a pretty great, similar tone with the deluxe player and a Fender Frontman 212R (pretty affordable amp).

LPs are nice though...I want one too.

If you have $700 look at the Gibson Les Paul Studio (799) or the Gibson Faded SG Special ($699)
