I also have a Squier Bullet Strat in black. Good knock about guitar. Plays well - nice neck ( for me). Wouldnt bother changing anything as parts and/or labor will be greater $ than cost of guitar. If you must change electronics, just get a complete populated pickguard from EBay, remembering that body is thinner than MIJ/MIM or US Strat and control cavities are not as deep therefore.

I also have a MiJ Fender Strat and an '80's US made "The Strat". No comparison in playability or sound, both of which ar relative - different hands/ears suit different setups.

Here's my take on this. I have 2 of these now. The stock pickups as they are seem to be tailored for Metal. If you're looking for that ultra-treble, hot, quick response, that's what it is.

One of mine, I left alone. The pickups sound more like p-90's than humbuckers to me. In some cases I like that for a vintage hot sound. And they definitely do metal.

The other one, I swapped basically everything but the body. I put a Dimarzio Super Distortion in the bridge, and an Air Norton in the neck. It pretty much sounds just like my Ibanez guitars. The Super Distortion has more midrange and balls than the stock Squier bridge, and the Air Norton neck actually sounds flat compared to the stock one I took out. So I actually like the stock Squier neck pickup better.

If you're more into a heavier sound than uber-treble-hot in the bridge, then I'm not so sure there are any better passive pickups than a good ol' fashioned Super Distortion in the bridge for chain-sawin'..

Give the stock pickups a chance first. Mess with your settings, and give it a week or so. I think you might find that the pickups are just fine for Metal. And in my opinion, better in the clean channel than a lot of what gets used for metal.
