I just bought a 2002 20th anniversary Squier. I had it set up professionally, so now all total, I have $100 in it. A friend said to get a 5 watt tube amp in order to get the nicest tone from the fender. Which brand/type would be best. I don't want to spend a bundle.

You can get a Fender Champion 600 for a nice price. Very nice 5 watt tube amp.

Thanks. I'll check out the "champ".

I second the vote for the Champion 600. I did put a Weber speaker in mine after a good bit of use but it is a great little amp as is. If you check out ebay you may find a very good deal on one of these. I also seem to notice alot of guitar stores putting these little amps on sale recently.
After some playing around with the amp for awhile you may want to get one of the "amp modeling" pedals to add some reverb and a bit of eq. I sometimes run through a Boss GE-7 Equalizer and a Boss FDR-1 '65 Fender Deluxe Reverb-Amp Pedal for a little more control and a touch of reverb. The Champ seems to really take these pedals well.
Anyway its a great practice amp with or without help from aftermarket speakers and pedals. I very much suggest trying out other small "practice" amps too. I've heard good things about the Vox AC4TV and the Epiphone Valve Jr. You can check out many clips of these amps on youtube but try them out before you make a purchase. There's alot more info on these amps in the amp section of the Fender Forum.

Not to be a Fender Party Pooper, but I would go with the Vox AC4TV. It is all tube with a 10" Celestion speaker. It has a built in attenuator. You can choose between 4 watts, 1 watt and 1/4 watt. The power tube is an EL84 and the preamp tubes are 12AX7's. This amp is a tone monster. I had one and sold it to my brother when I bought my bigger Vox AC15C1 and I did a side by side and I could get the same tone from the small amp as I could the AC15. It has a smooth powerful overdrive sound at very low volume and though it doesn't have nearly as much clean headroom as the AC15, you can get great clean tone. It is more British Class A sounding than the champ, but that is not bad.. just different. I can say good things about Fender amps though...They have an incredible clean sound, probably the best in the business. The AC4TV combo is in my opinion on the same sound scale as the 50's Tweed Reissue Champ which cost around $1000. The AC4TV cost is $249.

I have used all sorts of Fender amps and guitars and I can't say anything bad about any of them, but my small, low watt amp preference is Vox.

I agree. The Vox AC4TV is a lot better sounding than the Fender Champion 600 in my opinion as well.

Vox's and the Fender Champ 600 are good amps, but if you want a "genuine Fender sound" go with a Fender Vibro Champ XD they are about $50 more than the 600 and can do a lot more things. Plus you can get the saturated power tube tone without cranking it up. 5 tube watts are very loud for home use.

Check out the Blackheart Killer Ant. This is an unbelievably cool sounding tube amp.

It has an amazing clean tone at low volumes but a big overdriven blues/classic rock sound when you turn it up. I takes pedals really well. Just a great amp. You can get it with a 10 inch Blackheart cab for about the same price as a Valve Jr. or Champ 600.

A friend of mine just bought the 1W head for $70 on Craigslist.

Consider a Fender G-DEC. Not a tube amp, but close enough to a whole bunch of amps.

I would never advise a G-DEC over a Vibro Champ. Period.

I bought a GDEC 3 Amp earlier this year, and as cool as the Fender Fuse editing and recording stuff was, I found that the sound was pretty weak and electronically processed. Perhaps I am just too much of a fan of tube amps now, but the presets seemed to be really weird niche sounds that I would never use and I play all sorts of blues, classic rock and rock.

The ability to have a backing track in your own amp was cool with the GDEC, but not cool enough to overcome the poor sound.

For an inexpensive good amp with a lot of options, I have heard a lot of buzz about the SuperChamp XD. It is a tube amp with a DSP processor built into it. I have seen a few youtube reviews and was pretty impressed by the sound that people were getting out of it.

I have a Super Champ, and it is a pretty good amp for the $, and the Vibro Champ is essentially the same amp only in a 5w version rather than a 15w Super Champ.

Kustom makes a small tube head. Like the Champ it has only volume. Being a tube amp the volume controls the tone you want. It is $99, with a 1x12 Kustom Defender cabinet another $99 and for $200 you have an amp that will be more versitile then most 5 watt amp combos. You can also run a Kustom 4x12 cabinet for even more options. The 4x12 is $200. Go to youtube and you can hear and see a demo of this little amp. That being said Fender's Vibro Champ $199 has more tones built in. Get down to your local store and try a few and enjoy. Good tone hunting
