My long range plan is to buy a Fender American Deluxe Strat. I'm wondering in the mean time if I would get meaningful improvement in sound by upgrading the components on my Squier Affinity starter geetar?

If so what pickups would you recommend? I like to play both Blues and Rock. I'm rather ignerent. Is there a good guide posted somewhere?
Thanks! :)

Yea, you can improve the sound. I've been recommending these for a while now.

Don't let the price fool you. They are really good, and that price is for a whole set. I have both of these sets now they're both great. You'll notice an improvement instantly.

I read the other day that Billy Gibbons favorite pickups happen to be my favorite pickups. Of course he usually plays humbuckers while I play single coil... Butttt. My fav is Seymour Duncan Antiquity Series.

I stumbled onto these pickups, because I bought two sets of Lollar and one pickup was bad in one set and the store didnt have another set.. They said.. hey... you need to try these.... They are the best of Seymour Duncan.. He was so right. This is as close to a true vintage sounding pickup, one it amazing tone that allows you to still hear the natural sound of the wood. They are first class all the way. In the Antiquity Series, they make single coil, humbucker, Strat, Tele, Les Paul pickups. For a set of three, last time I paid $275 online for them. I have a tele with Fender Custom Shop Texas Specials and the Antiquities sound better... More woody, earthy sounding.. more natural. And I really like the Texas Specials as my second fav pickups.

Hope that helps, but if you have not tried them, go ahead and do it. They may come in handy later on...

Those would be awesome for upgrading a MIM or American Strat, however, at that price just the PUP's would be $100 more than the guitar's original price. Titanic71, if you do go with the SD's, I would wait until you get your American Deluxe. For your Affinity, I'd get the Benson's , some GFS PUP's (http://www.guitarfetish.com), or the less expensive version of Texas Specials (which are $149) , the Fender Tex-Mex set (which are about $80 new).

Muchacho, I think the GFS pickups are all but identical to the Texas Specials. Just reverse engineered. You are right about getting those.

Yeah TJ I have their Texas Set in my Strat and they sound the same as the Texas Specials that I played on at GC. And, only 1/3 the cost!
