Hi Guys, I'm a noob here but not a guitar noob! Have been playing for 30 years and know my way around an axe, but I have a problem and I hope you can help.
I picked up a Squier for my cousin on ebay. Perfect little guitar for him...all good. BUT input jack caused hum and hiss with any guitar cable movement, I could lock it in a good position via the "back through strap" method but it was driving him crazy so I said no probs lets get a new jack and I'll wire it up. I've done this soo many times I can't count but since installing it hums and carries on twice as bad as before.
The initial problem is gone - zero noise from any lead movement but an almighty (not grounded) sound emits from the guitar. I have checked all my soldering/connections and they all look better than original.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance
Thing

Are you maybe getting the classic 60 cycle hum from the pickups?

Has the ground wire to the trem claw come loose?

Not present before installing the new jack... so I don't think so.
metropilis maybe onto something as the wires were pulled around a bit. I'll check it out and get back.

OK after further inspection (and no the ground wire to trem was intact) it looks like I may have melted through the shieded wire when soldering the raw one  ...stay tuned (pardon the pun).

I just got a nice 2000 Squier Standard and had to rewire the input wire. It hummed and buzzed. I opened it up and the old wire was hanging buy 4 strands. lol That wire was corroded bad. I cut it back and re-soldered and no buzzing. Now I'm thinking I should replace the whole wire since it looked like crap when I opened up the input jack area. It sounds ok, But maybe it may not be working good still or not working to it's potential.

I exhausted all avenues. Checked my solders and there was zero contact between the two wires ? (the shield was intact)

Then checked I had wired correctly in the first place...yep all good. I then re-soldered..... Same problem. :x

OK what to do ? Cut the wires back by half an inch, soldered again and bingo problem solved. Should not have worked as all was OK previous to the install (apart from the lead crackle I did it for in the first place). I was gentle but perhaps not gentle enough.

Thanks Suek, a simple suggestion has done the trick.

Cheers to all who replied.

Well you made my day. You're welcome. Maybe we can save someone the aggravation of not buying a new jack. It makes me wonder if I should replace the whole wire since mine looked so corroded, A dark gray. The only problem is finding the wire at a short length. Mostly everywhere wants me to buy 10 ft of it. lol I'm glad all worked out for you!!!
