looking for a new Telecaster without breaking the bank

l was looking at the Classic Vibe 50s Tele, the Classic Vibe 60s Tele Custom
the Squier Vintage Modified Telecaster Custom (humbuckers) or the Standard Squier Tele

which of these would be the best deal to buy, l play mostly Blues and Blues Rock but love some country honk sometimes ala Keith and l would like a Tele that will be consistent and last a few years so suggestions

also lf the affinty Tele a for sure no go, ls lt really that terrible

Any of the classic vibe's are great, the VM Custom-II with p-90s is popular The VM's aren't quite as refined as CV's. The affinities are a great platform to build on. a new nut, pickups, pots, a little fret work and they are great.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. 8)

Have you looked at the MIM Fenders?

classic vibes and vintage modified are great guitars!
standards and affinitys are ok... some might be garbage others might be great.

I.M.O classic vibe is the way to go. they have great quality which rivals that of mim fenders.

I am a long time Fender man and I bought a Squier Affinity because it was cheap and had a nice neck. I modded it into one of my favorite guitars. Since then I bought both the Classic Vibe 50's and 60's Teles and I am very impressed at the quality straight from the factory. My guitar tech tells me after setting up both of the CV's that they are as good as the American made Tele's. He is also a long time Fender player. Don't let the name fool you. Squier is making some great guitars. I put Seymour Duncan Antiquity I and II's into my tele's and swapped out the tuners for Fender/Schaller Locking Tuners, and that was about it. It is my opion that the 60's Classic Vibe Tele is the best they have made to date. It is a beautiful guitar and again, it came pretty close to perfect from the factory. They seem to really care about the setup before they ship. I can't say that for every Fender or Gibson coming off the production line.

If you want to get in-tune with what is going on in the Squier world, go to the Squier Talk Message board.

Enjoy,

TJ

I bought a used Squier Affinity for $75. It looked new but played like crap.I took it to my local shop and had a professional setup done by local legend Ted Vig. He dressed the frets, shimmed the neck and clipped the treble bleed cap. it plays great and and the bridge pickups doesn't sound "icepicky".

I have a Custom II Tele and it plays and sounds great. For $250 it's a steal, you might want to try one.

I have been looking at those. I would take the P90's out and put in TV Jones P90's.

I don't know how much the TV Jones pups are but you would still be less than a MIM Tele. I like my Hwy One Tele alot but I like the Custom II just about as much.

I finished moding my CV Tele 60's. I did quite a bit to it as I did a lot to my CV 50's Tele.

On the 60's CV I changed the pickups to a set of Fender Custom Shop 51' Tele Nocaster pickups. I replaced the box switch with a standard issue Fender 3 way switch. I also put a "GreaseBucket" tone circuit upgrade on wiring.

I replaced the bridge with a Wilkinson Tele bridge with compensated brass saddles. I had a bone nut installed and locking Fender/Schaller staggered locking tuners.

That is a lot of moding and it wasn't a cheap proposition. But what I have is a great sounding guitar. Using the Custom Shop pickups kept it sounding like an vintage Tele, the "Greasebucket" tone circuit upgrade keeps the bass from increasing when you roll off the treble. Excellent design that is used on higher end Tele's and has been around for about 5 years. The brass bridge saddles and bone nut upgrade makes this guitar a joy to tune. It just slides into tune and stays there for the most part. The staggered locking tuners have a lot to do with that as well. The guitar feels top shelf and performs like a finely tuned Porsche.

I would have to say if I were rating before and after tone. The before was dull sounding and the after is brilliantly alive and vibrant. I think I did everything except the body, neck and frets. The base guitar was screaming to have incredible parts put on it.

I think I have spent a total of $525 and then 80 for a decent case.

You are in the MIM Strat Territory when you compare price, but I would put this against any of the MIA Tele's out there without blinking an eye. I think it has worked out in my favor this time. I didn't build this guitar to sell and make money, I built it as a player's guitar. I know it not collectible, as some MIJ model Squier's are, but I am very happy.
