No hate here, either. I love mine. A lot of the trashing on them that I have seen is by people who are trying to compare them to more expensive instruments, which is rather silly in my opinion. It goes without saying that if you start comparing one to something that's out of its league, it will come up short in certain areas. Fit and finish aren't always what they would be on a more expensive instrument, nor are the electronics up to the same quality. They are more of a budget instrument for beginners, and several things about their design reflect that.

I've also heard quality can vary a lot, and for all the good ones out there, there are also some real dogs.

There are a couple of things I plan to change about mine to improve its tone and responsiveness, but after giving it a good setup to match my preferred string gauge, I'm
quite happy with the way it actually feels and plays.

i have gigged with an affinity Squier's, stock uneffected just pure guitar overdrive... what i noticed are that noisy hum from the pickups... the sound is ok.. but not so ok.. It doesn't seem to scream right unlike the Fenders... maybe it's just me..

I bought my squire affinity for 50 bucks. Took it to GC and had the neck trued along with a bone nut to replace the plastic one. Bought a set of Fender custom shop Texas special pickups and a 4 ply pick guard, rewired the electronics slightly to accommodate the new pick-ups and that little guitar really screams.

I own several different brands of guitars but for outright intensity this thing outperforms even my Les Paul. 8)

As a "Fender guy" I ask,"What do you mean even my Les Paul". Maybe you mean, "especially my Les Paul"? Or at least that's what I'd say (as a "Fender guy", of course). I think Squiers get beaten on, literally and figuratively, and deserve more respect than they usually get. I also believe Squiers are closer to Fender Strats/Teles than Epi LPs are to Gibson LPs in many ways. And this just gets under my skin - Squier not Squire. I understand that people don't pay attention or conflate "Esquire" - a sort of early one-pup Tele with Squier - a company purchased by Fender. Wikipedia explains the history pretty well as does the Fender website. But I Iove it - $50 Affinity turns into a wailer - what could be better!?! Fender snobs - eat your bank accounts.

I recently bought a '96 Affinity for AU$150. I saw this as a great guitar to modify, because I love black strats, it has 22 frets, the neck feels great and it's not super-heavy.

I'm thinking of upgrading the pickups, bridge, tuners and nut. I can do all of these myself to keep the costs down, and at the end of it I'll have a great guitar. I couldn't say no!

I have the same guitar, a MIC black Affinity that has received raves from everyone who has played it. Three blues performers played it and then searched and found their own. The '96-'98 Affinities are essentially the same as '96 MIJ Bullets (not the same as contemporary Bullets): 1.75" alder bodies (mine are 3-piece), a slick and straight neck (no skunk but with r'wood fingerb's it's not needed), and terrific action. One simply must change pups and pots (the cheaper electronics gotta go) and tuners (I also changed to a Tusq nut), but since I never use the trem I can't speak to its functioning except that the three springs are very tight on mine(I built another Strat and turned it into a hardtail which is more appropriate to what I play). You'll love it.

I have two Affinity strats, one from 2000 and another from 2009. If someone asked me to recommend a guitar in that price range the Affinity is what I would say. Brilliant little guitars, would buy another in a minute if I needed one :)

I saw a great blues band last weekend and their lead guitarist was playing an Affinity Strat. I asked him about it on their break and he said that he had a couple of Fender Strats but this was his favorite giging guitar. He said he liked the lighter weight body. He had also modded it with Tex-Mex pickups. He was playing through a Deluxe Reverb and his tone was great. This guy let his playing do the talking and wasn't worried about the decal on his headstock.
