well for my first guitar I got the Squire SE Strat kit from Musiciansfriend and it seems dead to me right out of the box

http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/prod ... sku=513287

Tried multiple amps, multiple cords and get absolutly nothing out of the guitar. Any suggestions? a tech is suppose to call me in the next couple of days from Musicians Friend.

I took off the back cover and pick guard and found all wire attached same for the output jack.

I'm open to any suggestions.

Thanks

Warranty or replacement. Sorry, but it may have been knocked around a little too much before you received it.

I went thru something similar back in '08 with a Squier Bullet I bought as an impulse thing...out of the box it was dead. In my case, it was a bad solder joint at the jack. I could have returned it for warranty I'm sure but because it was such a simple repair and because it was only a $100 guitar, 2 minutes with a soldering iron did the trick. So with that, here's the way I see it...

Obviously the wiring is messed up somewhere. As rk said there, you could certainly return it under warranty but as you got this from Musician's Friend, there's a chance you may get stuck with some additional shipping to send it back to them. -If it were me-, I'd go back over that wiring VERY thoroughly and see if I can find the problem. It's unlikely that all three pickups would be bad, so I'd start at the output jack and work my way backwards. Don't just "look" though...wiggle those wires and see if anything comes off. If you have an ohm meter or even a simple continuity tester, USE IT to help isolate where the problem is. Is there continunity from the jack to the volume pot? From the volume pot to the switch? You get the idea...

It could just be something really stupid like a cold solder joint or something that's really easy to fix. This is just me but as annoying as it is, I'd rather spend 2 minutes with a soldering iron rather than pay the shipping to have it sent back...and be without the guitar until they send it back to you. If we were talking about a $500 instrument let alone something like an American Standard or nicer, yea...I'd possibly send it back but for something stupid like this on an inexpensive guitar...I'd just do it myself and be done with it.

Good Luck,
Jim

+1, thats the most likely reason. Never buy guitars online. Get guitar centres to order them in, that way if they're dead you can get a refund.

I would not say to NEVER buy guitars online, as I got most of my 20+ guitars from online purchases, and most were great deals that I could not find at any store in person. But until you know about and get good act fixing them, just be careful of who you buy your guitars from. Besides, this was a starter pack, most of which are kept in the boxes at most of the stores I have been to, so unless he tried it in the store, he could have still ended up with a dead guitar. Granted the exchange would have been easier if he was in a store, but just cause you buy it in a store does not automatically guarantee that your purchase may not possibly have issues and/or problems. I have heard of people having issues with walk-in stores too, so do not think buying in stores is 100% hassle-free.

Many of the big online sellers and stores offer Return & Refund policies of anywhere from 14-60+ days (depending on the store) where you have that time period to return the guitar for any reason, no questions asked. Also if you purchase a brand new guitar from most of these online dealers and stores, the guitar comes with warranty coverage, and a guitar being dead on arrival fresh out of the box usually qualifies under warranty coverage. Yes, its possibly a hassle to have to deal with customer service and ship a guitar back to them, but if I did not buy guitars online, I would have spent many more thousands of dollars to acquire all the guitars I have, and unless you have a few extra thousand dollars to spare, buying online is the way to go...Plus many stores may not have what you are looking for with all the vast number of products and manufacturers out there these days, and online is sometimes the way to go.

However, this is only with stores...if you buy online from individuals they are not a store and obviously do not have the ability to just send you out a new one like places like Musicians Friend and other places like that can...

Buying online can be hit and miss, but i think generally its not too often you will receive a guitar DOA.. I have only ever had one DOA.

My issue with buying online isn't fear of damaged merchandise as much as simply every guitar is different. The Squier Bullet I mentioned above was one of the very few exceptions...I didn't play it before I brought it home (as I said it really was an impulse buy). Even for an inexperienced player, a lot of times people can still feel some difference from guitar to guitar, even between the same "style" (such as the generic term "Strat") and often even between the exact same model line. When I purchased my '08 Squire Standard "Special" for example, they had two that visually appeared identical but there was in fact some subtle differences between them and I brought home the one that I thought felt better to me.

That said, bowlfreshener is absolutely correct...with something like a "Strat Pack" (I'm starting to wonder if we should be calling those packages "Rat Packs" instead,LOL!), online or store...doesn't really matter a whole lot. It's certainly possible to get a bad one either way. It happens.

Anyways, just an extra $.02 worth...don't spend it all on Ebay!

I know I when I bought my Epiphone Les Paul Standard from Musician's Friend the photo of the silver sparkle guitar I bought was a mellow color. When I got it I said " Oh my God, It's ugly". lol It's a little too flashy and reminds me of those little kid rides at the carnival. lol I kept because I got it cheap and sounds good. But if I seen it in person I would have said no. So buying online sometimes IS a gamble.

Contactmo, I work for MF and would be happy to help you out with this. E-mail your order number to forums@musiciansfriend.com and I'd be happy to see what I can do for you.

Cheers!
