It depends...

What style of music do you like to play???

Styling???

Do you want "twang"???

Play both and see which one you like more.

It's all a matter of opinion!

I've owned both. but I loved my tele's the most. They have a wider option of pickups. single coils, humbuckers, p90's, and a mix of any plus a few 3 pu models. Strat's have SSS, HSS, and very few HH but no p90's

Just my 3 cent's

I have played a few Tele's but never owned one. I have always been a Stratocaster man myself. For me it is the headstock I do not like on the Tele. I have never heard or played one that could get me to purchace one because of the one cosmetic flaw I see in them. There have been a couple models I liked with the Stratocaster headstock, but at the time I was not looking for Tele.

Basically all I can say is to play both guitars, play as many different models and see which one appeals to you the most. After all, it is going to be your guitar and you have to be happy with what you play.

1+, play em, then you'll get a taste of what they're like.

It's a matter of taste and sound.

I like Strats and don't care for Tele's at all. Its the look of them, kind of clunky and the headstock is out of balance. My brother is the exact opposite. He likes Tele's for the look.

Strats are the most comfortable to me and after playing them for a while everything else is just not quite right.

I always wanted a Les Paul. But when I pick one up now if feels like I am playng a big chello or viola sideways.

Just go to the store and fool around till you find something that feels and sounds right to you.

Telecaster vs. Stratocaster: It's all a matter of taste. some of the greatest performers played telecasters. i.e. Muddy Waters, Chrissy Hynde, Joe Strummer, Bruce Springsteen, Waylon Jennings, etc. Some of the greats that played Stratocasters: i.e. Jimmy Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Buddy Guy, Stevie Ray Vaughn. Play both and decide for yourself. Which one is more comfortable in your hands? Which neck feels better? They both come with a variety of necks. Which one looks better to you? Which one sounds better to you? There a lot of variables that go into choosing the right guitar. Do your research, and you'll choose the right one for you.

I prefer Stratocaster, I just like the sound better. Telecaster reminds me of the old Dire Straits tunes though!

I have both.
The strat has a tremlo arm... so if you're into using that you may want to steer towards the strat.
The tele came out first though and what contributed to popularizing this whole crazy R&R thing! :)

If you're just starting out, try both and see which one feels and sounds right.
They're both sold in similar price ranges from $250 (Squire) - $$$$ (vintage).
