I just bought my Squier Affinity Fat Strat and always like to put brand new strings on any guitar I purchase, I played it for a couple of days and noticed that the G string really sounded bad. Sort of like buzz but almost too metallic and twangy. So I put on a set of Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky 9/46 strings.

I checked out the setup which seemed to be fine after I adjusted the truss rod a bit and I checked string height and the intonation and made a slight adjustment to two of the strings. All of the strings except the G string seem fine. The G string is still buzzing and has too much of a twang to it. It almost overpowers all the other strings.

Any ideas or suggestions before I take it to be looked at?

2 different issues, as for the buzzing is it all frets or a few or open. Most likely it's the nut but could be in the string saddle. Most factory nuts are for 10's not 9's If the buzz is when played open take a paper match and split in half if that fixes the buzz then the nut is cut to deep go up one size on the string, check the string height it don't take much to buzz, adjust the saddle height. As for the twang it may be the pickup is/are to high staggered pole pickups are notorius for this. A new quality nut is a great upgrade for affinity's. sometimes setting a guitar up for the lowest action brings out nasty quirks. Good Luck I've used the match trick on many guitars that I wanted lighter guage strings and did not have the time or money to get a new nut. Beware of cheap offers to replace your nut.

I've got the exact same problem on my Affinity strat, just the g string, kinda funky g string. On my computer tuner an open g starts out fine then flips to e flat for a mement then to d. Adjusted the innotation and it is better, flips to e flat and back and forth to g. Fretted g notes are stable, I'll try the match stick in the nut, or maybe a set of 10's I already have.

Thanks for the tip.

Thanks for the tip. I replaced the Ernie Ball strings with a set of DR Tite-Fit MT10's and lowered the neck pickup. Problem solved!! Once the strings stretch out I will work on intonation. But it plays very nice now.

I got the Bullet 150 amp with the package and played my Larrivee D03 that has a K&K Mini pickup in it through the amp. Man did it sound good!

Again, thanks for the tip about the size 10 strings and the high pickup.

You might try a little 3 in 1 oil on the nut. It sounds like the string is binding in the nut.

Do NOT use oil. Graphite(pencil lead) chap stick or one of the other goops you can buy to lube the nut but not oil. Oil will soak into the wood and make any repairs if any down the road a night mare.

changed the original strigs to 10's and used some graphite, ground up lead from a mechanical pencil.

problem solved, tuning and innotation is dead on.

My Bad, Fender recommends 3 in 1 for the saddles and string trees. Not the Nut
