I just purchased a Squire Affinity HSS Strat (2008 new old stock) and would like to replace the standard white pickguard with a pearl pickguard. The Strat is the midnight blue color so I thought a white pearl pickguard would look best on it.

Anything I need to know before I go replace it as far as wiring, screw placement, where to get a new pickguard, etc.?

Mark

Well an affinity series body is not the same size as other series so that my throw things off a bit. Next is that the screw holses may not line up but that's not too big of a deal. Guitarfetish.com usually has great prices on hardware. it's all pretty simple though and you should not hav much trouble.

Well the Affinity series bodies are only thinner, everything else is standard strat dimensions. A Fender strat guard should fit no problem but you will have to drill holes.

I have a pearl one from GFS looks great. As for screw holes I think most guitars are always a little off on one or more screws.

Forgive my ignorance in asking this but once I take all the screws off does the original pickguard just lift right off? I realize I have to pull the knobs off the volume and tone, and unscrew the pickups.

Also, is GFS the same thing as Guitarfestish.com

You'll also have to unscrew the switch, but yes then the pickgaurd just lifts off onec unscrewed.

As I write this for you, I sit with three pick guards in hand. One is a 1990 USA Stratocaster, One is a 2003 Indonesia Bullet and the other is a 2005 China Affinity. I lay them one on top of the other and lined-up the the pieces so I can see the differences. Barring the Bullet being a 10 hole configuration and only few of the holes in different location the pieces are near identical. The two other pieces are 11 hole configuration and they are interchangeable.
The biggest difference in all the pieces is the width and depth of the cut-out for the bridge with the USA Strat being the smallest then the Affinity and then the Bullet. Everything else is the same from the neck pocket cut-out to the shape and size of the contours switch and tune volume holes included.
Look at the pots and if you have a solid bond wire running across them you will want to be sure of the spacing The Bullet varies in this respect that it has a shorter distance between the upper most pots and you will have to bend the bond wire. It is a drag to see a hack on any guitar. I doubt this will be your problem as the squier has not had a solid bond wire in them that I know of and the Affinity and Stratocaster are identical in measure. I suggest that when you place the new guard in do not tighten any of the screws until you have them all started first. This will keep you from stripping out the holes and allow any micro differences to align.

I don't know much about replacing a pick guard but they sell them at stores like Guitar Center. My guess is that you would just unscrew the pick guard.

hmm, interesting... i just picked up a 2004 indonesian affinity, and was considering replacing the pickguard - nice to see that this thread has already started.

it appears to be relatively the same size/contours as my mim standard and my mim deluxe fat. i want to order a specialty pickguard from an auction site seller.

major-g: you had a 2005 china affinity... what do you think would be the variance between that, the 2003 indo, and my 2004 affinity?

Be sure not to make scratches while removing this. it might turn to mess and bringing it to shop will be necessary.

Pickguards are very easy to replace. With Squiers your biggest issue will be that the holes will probably not line up and you will have to screw in to the body and create new holes. They won't be visible unless the pickguard is removed. The only other issue is to remember exactly the order of everything. Make sure your pickups are facing with the fat end towards the bridge. Make sure the pickups are where they are supposed to be, i.e. neck, middle, bridge and make sure your switch isn't upside down when you screw it back on. No real harm though if you do it other than having to undo everything again and get it right the second time.

I don't recommend paying for a pg at places like GC. Yes, they will sell you an authentic PG from Fender and you will pay $30 - $40 for it. Your best bet is ebay or GFS.

Have fun, replacing the PG is a very simple mod that can totally change the look of your guitar.
