A couple of months ago I picked up a Black/maple Squier II made in Korea (MIK). $90.00 pawn shop special. I bought if for the bueatiful maple neck and thought the plywood body would just be something I would toss away.

Well I took it home and cleaned it up. I put a new Guitarfetish steel bridge and trem block on it. I screwed down the claw and put 5 springs acrross the back.

Well I am sure wrong about the plywood. The instrument has the most bueatiful blues growl, especially in an open E tuning with a glass slide.

Well I spotted another one in somewhat less well kept condition. another $100.00 pawn shop special. This one is fire engine red and maple neck. Those MIK maple necks look as good as my MIA maple, the only problem is that they have small frets. I am used to the medium frets on MIA MIM MIC. But these MIK are late 1980's and early 90's guitars.

The only real problem I can spot is that there is some cracking in the paint on either side of the body were the neck attaches. I am not a fan of the color red so I plan to sand this one down to the wood and repaint it emerald green metallic. At that time I will get to inspect the layers of the ply a little better. Hopefully the crack is just in the paint and not the ply.

Any one out there with a plywood MIK let me know what I might expect, if you have run up on the same situation with the cracks. Both my black and red MIK have these cracks. I plan to never use the tremelo system on these to minimize stress on the joints.
