Hey guys/gals, I'm working on modifying a Squier '51. Since they didn't make very many of these guitars and I'm lucky enough to have gotten my hands on one I would like to do these mods without harming the guitar as much as possible. My question is: I'm going to swap the stock tuners for Grover Kluson style tuners. Has anybody else done this, if so was it relatively easy or did you have to alter the guitar to do so. I have the skills/knowledge to do it just looking to keep the headstock as stock as possible in case I would ever want to put it back in its original condition. Thanks!

Welcome.

If you want to put a Kluson type on:

1. You'll have to drill 7 holes to accommodate the set.

2. The Kluson type bushings will be quite loose in the post holes due to the size of the OEM tuners' shafts being much larger. Further, this will eventually cause the Kluson (type) tuners themselves to fail as the posts will wobble around in their post holes and stretch their own gears. Wrapping teflon tape around or shimming the undersized Kluson (type) bushings will not correct the situation. Adapter bushings to correct this situation are available but last I checked, these adapters cost close to the price of another set of tuners! Unfortunately here too though, these adapter bushings (nor the Klusons) do not cover the imprint in the face of the headstock wood by the OEM tuners' washers.

I doubt you want to dowel up the existing holes and then drill for a smaller diameter so if I were you, I think I'd leave well enough alone. YMMV.

How do you feel about a set of mini Grovers?

I put them on my '51 - easy first time fit, no adjustments required. The quality is light years ahead of the stock tuners.

I don't like Grovers at all so I'd be the wrong person to ask.
