Ohh Squires vs. MIA or MIM. Squires are great intro guitars until you start modifying them. Then they become great guitars. They're perfect on the budget, and make it affordable to modify. I've owned an 1985 Squire Stratocaster made in Japan, since 1985. I only paid $85.00 used for it, and over the years, have modified the hell out if it. First I had it re-fretted with jumbo frets. Then dropped in a DiMarzio P.A.F. Pro humbucker in the bridge with a coil splitter, and dropped in new "Blues-Caster" electronics from Torres Engineering. This all took place over the course of nine years. It is now an excellent guitar. I've had many guitar tech's and pro players tell me so, and have even made offers to buy this guitar. It will never be for sale. Also, remember Dave Murray from Iron Maiden even lists a Squire in his touring arsenal. Buy what you can afford, and play the hell out of it untill the frets are so worn down that it becomes fretless. Just because a guitar maybe expensive, it does'nt mean it's better. I've played many expensive guitars, that just did'nt cut it, and I've played many expensive guitars that were great. Play the instrument before you buy it. They all have their own personality.

This thread should have been locked ages ago. You don't get away with the same bashing and useless bantering on most other message boards.

As with any other range or brand of guitars, you have duds and you have dudes (i.e. a guitar you pick up and say "DUDE!" out loud to yourself in the shop). I wouldn't be ashamed to own a MIJ, MIM, or MIA (yes, they made these, although they are rare) Squier. I personally try to avoid anything that has a Made In China label on it (the VCXD was the last MIC purchase I made, period).

Additionally, we'll probably see Squier guitars being produced in Mexico again soon enough. The word from bird is that the cost to produce stuff in China and other far east countries will cease to work out for American corporations (this might just mean the end for the MIM Standard Fenders).

Hmmm...I agree. I would hate for the rest of the MIC Squier owners get on here and bash this opinion around. As a proud owner of a Classic Vibe 60 Stratocaster (and oh yes, a "DUDE!!!" guitar), I will obstain from any further comments on this issue!!!

I will admit, the handful of Classic Vibe Series Squiers I've picked up and tried out were very nice instruments. Great aesthetics, decent tone, played great and they're a good value. In a way, I wish these were out when I first started playing. Maybe I would still have my first guitar today.

Let's see if production shifts to Mexico and I may just lift my personal embargo on the CVs ...

For example, my Affinity Strat SE happens to be a DUDE!!! guitar. I took it out of the box, said "Dang. I'll take it." That was 3 years ago, and I've never looked back. Ask texasguitarslinger about her Squier

What makes the Mexico, China, Asian Squiers different from each other?
Mine was made in Indonesia.

I use a Squier Jagmaster as my main stage guitar. I just changed the strings Monday night, practiced Tuesday night, and barely had it go out of tune. The secret? Stringing it right! So many people can't string an instrument right or maintain it! I know this sounds cocky, but true all the same. Take the time to stretch the strings good. Tug on them after getting them in tune. Tug all the way from the bridge to the nut. Do this several times, and your tuning will be set in stone.

Just a note : Having troubles with a guitar staying in tune is not some thing endemic to Squiers. It happens to evryone regadless of their particular instrument if the strings are not installed right. As Dan Erlewine says in his Guitar Player Repair Guide, "Install strings correctly, and they'll stay in tune". Basically it's not Squier's fault, it's yours.

To the OP, maybe if you change the word "Car" to "guitar" this song could be for you...

Hi to everyone on here, 1st time poster, long time lurker...great forum this for all things Fender.

I really don't need another guitar right now. But a guy i know is selling a Squire Pro Tone Telecaster, Korean made, upgraded with US Fender Vintage Pickups, original tortie scratchplate changed to a black, a kind of natural maple body colour, rosewood neck, the price asked is £325, around just over $525, seems expensive to me but he has got overheads of his own & wages to pay, etc... he's a dealer local to me here in the UK who knows i'm a Fender fetishist.

I'm going to have a look at it this afternoon or tomorrow morning. I know the Pro Tone range came out '97 or '98, i remember the awesome reviews they got in Guitarist, but i'm gonna view with an open mind, but as i say & keep saying...." i really don't need another guitar right now.."
