I have an Epiphone Les Paul Custom that I put on the internet for trade and the two offers i am considering are a Fender MIM Deluxe Series HSS which is about 7 months old , I also have been offered a MIJ 1992 Squier stratocaster "Waynes World" edition, apparently there were a little over 200 of these guitars made. Now normally I would choose a Fender over a Squier anyday but I have heard some great things about these Japanese Squiers, I was wondering what you guys thought would be a better overall guitar and why, as I am not an expert on stratocasters. Thanks for your help!

P.S I also posted this question in the "Stratocasters" section but I want to know what the squier guys think.

The best one is the one that sounds and plays the way you want it to.

I would take the Waynes World only because it might be worth money someday.

Personally I think an American Strat would be the way to go but I've heard good things about the MIMs. I just don't care for the fat necks.

Tough Call. you need to play each one the make the call. the hss has a few more sound options and mod's available and parts are more readily available.

only problem with that is the fellow with the MIM Fender lives quite far away and it would be a waste of his time if i just met up played it a bit and decided i didnt like it. This is definantly going to be a tough call, but either way I am looking forward to owning a stratocaster.

Can you go play one at a Music Store. At least that will give you an idea of the sound difference's and they should feel comparable. You didn't say if they were maple or rosewood necks. some people swear by one or the other and refuse to switch. I prefer Maple but I've owned more Rosewood

Both guitars have a rosewood fingerboard. I am probably going to go look at the MIJ Squier tomorrow sometime, if I end up taking a look at it I'll be sure to let everyone know the end result :)

Ok...this is just my opinion and it's probably a bit subjective. Also hopefully someone will come along and correct any mis-information I may provide here so use this at your own risk! :-)

Ok...Wayne's World MIJ. First off, yes, the MIJ's are typically very nice instruments...very well made, good parts, very playable, etc., etc.. They do have a well deserved reputation for being good quality instruments. That said, they're not really -that- valuable from any collectors stand point. I have an '85 MIJ Squier for example...one of the highly coveted "E-series" in fact. She's a -great- instrument...as good as any American Strat I've ever played...I got her for a whopping $350 after tax. A lot of people simply aren't interested in Squiers simply because they say "Squier" on the headstock instead of Fender. From what I was told by another local vendor, my '85 had sat in that guys store for a couple of years before I took her home with me. She's a -great- instrument in really primo condition, she's just not worth that much money.

Now as far as this Wayne's World edition, I really wasn't aware that there was such a thing so I can't really even say too much about specific details. I've seen a lot of people selling "tributes" of of the Strat Wayne was drooling over in the movie, (err..."Excalibur" as I recall?) but I don't remember seeing an genuine tribute series of any kind. On the other hand it doesn't surprise me either. Fender/Squier MIJ has apparently done a fair number of "60's reissues" of one sort or another over the years so I guess it wouldn't be a stretch for them to have at one point slapped an endorsement on a few to go along with the movie! LOL!!! I do think I would expect some kind of documentation in regards to it actually being a real "Collector's Series" (for lack of a better term) otherwise there's really nothing to suggest that it's anything other than a white Squier Strat with a rosewood fingerboard, etc..

Either way, while I could be wrong I would never suspect this instrument to be any kind of serious collectors piece at all...a Clapton Signature Series Strat, sure. A Stevie Ray Vaughn Signature Series Strat? Sure. A Wayne's World Squier? Ummm...yea...right...sure....whatever (sorry). Depending on condition, I would suspect such an instrument, even if it is a real "Wayne's World" Strat would likely only go for $250 to $350...maybe $400 tops (US of course) -if- it's in excellent shape and does indeed include some kind of documentation . If it doesn't have any kind of documentation and/or it's a bit worn, based on the price of used MIM Standards from that same period and based on it being a Squier, I wouldn't say any more than $250 tops...more likely $150 to $175 and I suspect that Epi Deluxe probably cost a bit more than that.

So with that all said and done, if it were me I would make my decision simply based on how well the instrument plays and sounds and how well you like it. If you like it more than the MIM Deluxe, then grab it, it not then get the Deluxe...the Deluxe is quite possibly a closer trade anyways.

Good Luck,
Jim

Anyways thanks again for all the info and relpies this thread is pretty much useless now, but I will stay on the forums so you should see me around! :D
