studying some basic chords can be very helpful, G chord, D chord, C chord, A chord, E minor, A minor, and so on...these are all fairly easy to learn, if you just keep trying at them eventually you will be able to play them by memory and by switching between some of these chords you can even make your own little riffs. Good luck with the guitar!

+1, well said, and by any chance do you like grunge?? I just thought cause of the name....

I do indeed like grunge, among many other styles of music, but yeah my personal favorite style has always been that raw seattle sound!

:) , thats sweet, I too love grunge, aswell as punk rock, hardcore punk, new wave, basically all the genres that revolve around punk rock.

Hey! I started out this past December :D and I agree with these dudes, teach yourself. First of all youtube is great, and secondly it's a more rewarding experience when you do it yourself. it's that feeling of yeah I totally did this on my own. Hanging around other people who play helps alot to you can learn alot from others just by watching. Another tip... start out with a classic rock or blues song to learn first, just to get a feel for the your guitar, most are simple power chords or picking phrases on a single chord. My first song was Simple Man by Lynyard Skynyrd. keep rockin! Us chicks have to show these guys how to play, right?

Sounds advice here.

I recently started myself.

When I was starting out, I bought a book and DVD.
The book was good to read and the DVD was good to see movements in the hands and fingers.

Marty Schwartz on youtube has some good free lessons for beginners.

To add to this, I've recently begun lessons, which has really opened my eyes.
