From here there are several ways. Either take lessons or teach yourself. Start to learn how to read tabs from your favorite artists, use youtube and listen carefully, everyday bask in the music. You may sound like garbage for a while but if you keep at it you'll get to where you want to go. The difference between someone who can play and someone who cant is one gave up. Tenacity only will dictate what happens next.

Why pay for lessons when you can get exactly what you want for free.

I started off 10 months ago, by just learning the simple CAGED chords, and then finding simple songs like Running to Stand Still by U2 which basicly only use those chords... Later I got into Jack Johnson and started learning my barre chords, which are hard at first but they come natural after a while. Then after a while, I had a nice bit of money to take a few lessons, I took like 5 where I learnt some simple songs, some tabs and the pentatonic minor scale... This pushed me in the right direction to continue learning by myself and develop my talent. I'm a very creative person so it all comes a bit naturaly to me after just a short while. Practice alternate picking, do some finger exercises, they do really help. I played metal for a while after this, which kind of helps, but my passion is and always will be texas-blues.

It's important you don't limit yourself to tabs only, as that requires no talent nor creativity. You want to play the guitar, not play numbers. Hope this helps!

Get a tutor man, to teach you the basic chords, techniques etc, then go on your own i reckon.

studying some basic chords can be very helpful, G chord, D chord, C chord, A chord, E minor, A minor, and so on...these are all fairly easy to learn, if you just keep trying at them eventually you will be able to play them by memory and by switching between some of these chords you can even make your own little riffs. Good luck with the guitar!

I do indeed like grunge, among many other styles of music, but yeah my personal favorite style has always been that raw seattle sound!
