There already starting to get rusty, I've had my squier for 2 years now. When I change into bridge pickup section, it sometimes cuts off, i hate that.

Should I change them?

What kind of music do you play? I have GFS (guitarfetish.com) pickups in one of my Squier Strats and DragonFire Texas Blues pickups in one of my Squier Telecasters. They are pretty inexpensive. If you don't mind spending more, I would also recommend Custom Shop 69s and Texas Specials. So, I say yes you should change them and the pots and switch while you are at it.

It sounds to me like the problem may be in your 5-way switch. If you do decide to change pickups, it's worth your while to install a new switch while you're at it. But before you do that, clean the switch to see whether that eliminates the problem. 8)

Sounds like the 5 way switch needs to be cleaned or replaced to me.

And if you want to really kick it up a notch, as Chef Emeril says, check out a loaded pickguard with pups, controls and switch

rileytheguitarist,

Sounds like you have already gotten some pretty good advice. Also look into EMG and Dimarzio preloaded pick guards along with the Lace. I recommend looking into that 5 way switch and see if you can blow out any dust, if that does not work, then replace the switch. This may be the cheapest option.

Those preloaded pick guards can cost almost as much as a new or used guitar. Weigh your options before pulling the trigger.

Thanks everyone for the advice.

I've heard of Dimarzio pick ups, in fact I think my uncle has em on one of his guitars, I'll check out both the sites later 8)

I'm just going to toss my $.02 worth in here...please use it as such.

"When" should you change your pickups? Simple...when you're sick of the way the sound. If you want to change them because they have a little rust or because of a faulty switch, you're changing your pickups for the wrong reason(s). Ok...yea...when it comes to chrome parts such as the bridge or something, I do like my parts to look "shiny" and I try to keep them as new looking as possible...I don't really care for the whole relic look myself. A beat up guitar looks like a beat up guitar whether you bought it new that way or not. But pickups are about -sound-. How do they sound to -you-? Are you happy with that sound? If so, I'd just replace the switch or fix the wiring that's causing the one pickup to cut out and be done with it...if the rust really bother's you -that- much, get yourself a small bit of steel wool and clean it. If you're not happy with the sound however, then yes...it's time to change pickups.

As to which pickups, honestly that's like asking what car should I drive or which TV should I buy? It's up to -you-...personally I tend to favor Duncan's and EMG's myself but I'm about to try an old pair of Evan's with a GFS in the bridge for something new and different. On the other hand some folks swear by DiMarzio and others still prefer Bill Lawrence. You're musical style can influence your choice certainly but there's really no "right" or "wrong" here or any one pickup that perfectly fits any specific genre. It's all about personal taste and preference...what sounds great to me or anyone else here may sound like garbage to you (or vise-versa).

Again just my $.02 worth,
Jim
