I am new to electric guitars, so I really do not know what I am looking at to judge it one is good or bad. Currently I am interested a Squire with the series number that starts with VNG1. Would some one tell me what this means? Thanks

VNG1? That sounds very odd to me. The "VN" would denote a Korean made Strat from the 90's as atolleter already indicated but the G? Typically Strats only have 1 or 2 letters at the front of the serial number. In the case of a Fender MIM Strat for example, a serial number starting with MN6XXXXX the "M" would indicate "Mexico", the "N" would indicate that guitar was made in the 90's and the six would indicate it was a '96. With the Squiers, the V would indicate that it was made in Korea at the Saehan plant (as apposed to Cor-tek) and the N would seem to indicate it was made in the 90's where as the next digit should have been a number indicating which year in the 90's it was produced...in other words, a VN2xxxxx would indicate it was made at Saehan in '92.

In other words, why the G is there, beats the crap out of me...I've never seen that before. Hopefully someone else will have some better info but unfortunately there's not a lot of documentation in regards to all of the Squier imports out there. I will say that my own experience with the Korean made Strats has been really hit or miss...I understand that some very nice instrument did come out of Korea in those days but the '92 Korean Squier I had was really a bad piece of crap. It would have been "ok" for someone just learning but it wasn't really a "quality guitar" by any stretch of the imagination. It was a cheap entry level instrument...and a pretty poor one at that. However since you said your new to electrics I must also emphasis that it's also not -that- big of a deal either....certainly not something to get overly worried about. I'm not trying to be rude here but the truth is that most who are just starting to play an electric can't really tell the difference between a "good" electric and a cheap one. If you like the guitar and if sounds and feels good to you, that's the only really important thing so regardless of what it may actually be, just enjoy it for what it is...a Strat :-).

BTW...if you're really looking for more info, some decent pictures would certainly help. Get some nice shots of the headstock (front and back), the body including some good clear shots of the bridge and if possible the heal of the neck and the neck pocket of the body. Most of the folks here on the forums can't really tell too much without seeing actual pictures of the guitar...a serial number can only tell us so much.

Just my $.02 worth,
Jim
