What style of music are you into? I play a Fender Stratocaster and a Gibson Firebird. From my guitar experience heres some advice.

- Invest in the locking tuners. Great addition I use them on my strat

- If your into metal get the nut, otherwise do not!

- Pick-up some Fender Straplocks. Greatest investment I ever made.

- One thing I've learned is not to mess with passive humbuckers. I consider them very unreliable. Check out some dimarizzo humbucker or even better a Seymor-Duncan.

I personally have never owned a Squier guitar because of no satisfaction in stock parts. basically the only thing you should keep on that guitar is the body, and the neck. That's why I buy Fender, Gibson, and Epiphone. Great products that have stock parts that need little to no modification. save yourself some time and unnecessary money and pick up a Fender HSS Stratocaster for $399. It's $150 more but comletely worth it. Why? Because the Fender name is greatly respected due to their reliability and well, its a Fender! But when people see a Squier they think "Eh well it sounds mediocre".

Hope my advice helps, and God Bless!

Phil

Well, if worry about he name on the headstock you'll be disappointed regardless. In my case, I could care less and let my fingers to the talking.

When I started playing guitar I also started being a guitar tech and learned everthing I could about setting up gear the way I like it. I have two Squier Standard Strats, a Affinity Strat, and a StageMaster HSH. Have I modified them, sure I have.

On the Strats, I've wired them with Fender 250 pots and 5 way switch and shielded the control cavities. The standards also have an on/off switch (just under 4 bucks at Radio Shack). On the gold and blonde strat, I have a tone pot wired to the bridge pickup. On the gold one, I also installed a set of GFS hot single coil pickups.

I don't have over $205 invested in any of my Strats and they sound really good.

On the black one, the next thing I'm going to do is add a bridge humbucker that fits ina single coil pick guard.

If you plan on using this guitar to do some crazy dive bomb stuff you will not keep it in tune regardless if you use locking tuners or a roller nut. Eddie VanHalen has a Guitar World Mag video talking about his new strat. In that video he speaks about how he use to keep that standard strat trem in tune back in the day. Thank God for Floyd Rose.

I use my trem on my strats and have found that you don't have use it much to achieve great effects. In that way, properly winding your strings and lubing the stock nut works well.

More than anything, having a good amp will improve your tone the most and learning to eq it properly will keep you happy for a long time.

Anyway, here's 2 cents worth, the rest will cost you. Have fun, cause that's what's important.

I just bought a Squier Std. Iused to have a shop in rockledge Fl. I've had an infinite # of strats to play with and have restored a '57 and also a '65 that was supposedly owned by Ronnie Prophet (old school).Ihave set-up untold #s of all makes of hot axes, and was a road hack& strip club muscian for a long time. Itook my Mark 12 Fender on the road along with a modified 335 and a paul '58 . I played a tele and strat for quite some time in the local clubs . That said the only thing I did to the Squier st. Strat was to adjust the truss rod and re-set & adjust the bridge And added dunlap strap locks. For an off the rack O.B. ax, it's awesome! Like I said yesterday, I'm a old-school geezer who still gigs. I am having a small problem with the way the squier strat positions from the strap. I wonder if anyone else has had trouble with this .Would adding a second straplock to the heel of the neck (drill thru the neck plate with a drill-press)carefully!!make the strat hang in the position I'm more comfortable with?? Like the pre asian solid body Epiphones & 335 Gibson.?

Before I drilled a whole in my neck plate would pull screw out add a washer and see if one of the screws already in the neck plate would hold the strap where I wanted it. It's not a great deal of difference, are you sure you can't adjust your strap enough to make up the difference?

I would avoid drilling a hole there on any bolt neck guitar.
