just wondering if the body, pickguard & neck of a squier bullet stratocaster (this years model) is interchangable with a MIJ 2008 stratocaster parts?

both are in transit now, and from the pictures it looks do-able (mij neck on squier body)- but will i be in for a nasty shock?

Probably, especially if they are both made in different factories.

Trial and error will be your only hope.

Not sure why you would change parts to begin with. They are both totally different quality guitars.

Just see which one is most playable leave it alone and work on the other. I would keep the neck and hardware and change out the body and pickups for better quality.

Welllllll....the Bullet neck should fit an MIJ body although I will add that if the MIJ has a neck, it's probably a much nicer neck than the Bullet will have. The pickguard...those will probably be different. Bullet's typically have cheap single ply pickguards and the holes are often inconsistently drilled from what I understand. If the MIJ has a decent pickguard, I'd use that otherwise I'd just get a decent Fender replacement from Guitar Center or some place similar (be warned...stick with genuine Fender pickguards for the MIJ body...brands such as "Allparts" don't usually fit without some re-drilling).

Also, if you're planning on swapping tuners between the necks, you could also run in to a problem...Bullet's usually use really cheap chrome covered tuners where as I understand that even the newer MIJ's typically have decent sealed tuners...and they -do- use different sized holes!

I would think the bridges should use the same metric spacing between the two but you'll want to measure that just to be on the safe side. Also pay attention to the depth of the trem block...Bullet's (and Affinities I think) have thinner bodies and as such, slightly shorter trem blocks.

Also...and this is a big one...pay attention to where the screw holes on the neck are. If they don't line up -exactly- you may need to drill or plug and redrill the neck to mount it to the body. Do -NOT- just screw directly in to the wood...you could split the neck (or fretboard or both) causing irreparable damage to the neck!

Let us know how it goes,
Jim

Being here in the states, I haven't seen one but I've read in a few places that they do still make Strats over in Japan and sell them in the European market...I seem to remember someone posting a picture of a brand new MIJ over in the Strat forum or someplace not too long ago. From what I understand, they don't sell them here in the US because they don't want to compete with themselves with the Mexican made instruments (which would certainly make sense). If that is indeed the case, I would venture to guess that they're no longer made at FujiGen the way they were back in the 80's...I would guess that Fender probably has their own plant over there by now.

I could certainly be wrong but that's what I've read.

Peace,
Jim

No Fender Doesn't have their own factory over there and they still subcontract the work out to one of the factories there. Some MIJ Fenders do still come over here like the Mustang reissue and HH Jaguar, but most of the higher Quality MIJ Strats and teles with Nitro finishes, Dimarzio or Fender USA pickups, don't get sold over here b/c they are for the Domestic Japanese market or Europe. However there are still ways to get them over here if you know the right people.
