Hi all,

Just found this site and very happy to be here.

I'm new to electric guitars and have a question about my Squier Strat. I have no interest in using the tremolo (whammy bar??) so do I need to do anything other than remove it...like tighten the bridge? Thanks in advance for the advice.

Hi old lefty, and welcome to the forum.

For most purposes, simply removing the whammy bar is all you need to do. However, if you are concerned about the guitar going out of tune you can also block the tremolo. This entails literally placing a block of wood inside the cavity behind the tremolo block (opposite the springs). Depending on how your bridge is set, you may also need to place a smaller wedge in front of the tremolo block.

If you have at least three tremolo springs installed, even that may not be necessary. Be aware that any changes you make to the bridge angle or string tension may necessitate a complete set-up. But don't let that dissuade you. There's very little you can do to a Strat that can't be undone.

I'm sure more knowledgeable people will be chiming in soon. In the meantime, feel free to post pictures of your guitar. :)

Once again, welcome! 8)

Welcome!!

I agree with Russianracehorse.
I have a block in several of my Strats. I don't like tremelos either.
