I'm putting in a set of Tex-Mex pickups in my Affinity Strat and wanted to upgrade to a 3 ply pickguard at the same time. I've been told that a 3 ply pickguard from Fender won't fit. I've got a Fender Standard Strat as well and to me they appear to have the same screw locations. Has anyone tried a Fender pickguard on your Squier Strat or know of an alternative 3 ply guard that fits?

I put an Allparts 3-ply pickguard on my Squier Standard Strat. The screw holes lined up just about perfectly, but the new pickguard was just a tad thicker than the original. I had to shave down the area that tucks up under the fretboard. It was a little more work than I expected, but it turned out just fine:

I say go for it! 8)

My advice would be to take your guitar up to some place such as Guitar Center and try a Fender pickguard before you order a custom cut one....see if a new one will line up with your old one. I can't speak for the Affinities...it's possible they could be different, but the pickguard on my '08 Standard is identical (in shape, size and screw holes) as the one that was on my '96 MIM...in fact the guard from the MIM is now on the '08 Squier.

Seriously...if you're already going to be changing pickups anyways, just take your old pickguard with you and go see if the holes line up...it very well may (and don't assume that because a salesman tells you it won't that it actually won't....salespeople don't usually know their butt from a hole in the ground). If it doesn't line up, then go ahead and order custom.

Just my $.02 worth,
Jim

Thanks guys for the info, great idea about just taking the pickguard in to a music store. I didn't see any that I really wanted where I usually shop however if they line up with a standard Fender guard I should be ok ordering one in a color I want.
